My fiancé and I are getting married a week from now in Las Vegas. I'm so excited!

Next step is to send off the I-130 and get the visa process going. The thing is, my passport (I'm the beneficiary) expires May 2013, so I've been thinking it would be a good idea to renew it before I (hopefully) get my visa. I can't renew it now, though, because I am travelling to the US to get married and need my passport for that. Would it be a problem if, for instance, I send a photocopy of my current passport for the DS-230 form, and then later renew my passport before the final interview? Or should I get my new passport before sending the DS-230?

I have sent an email to the embassy in Stockholm, but they say I shouldn't expect reply before 3-5 days... I'm the impatient type. Do any of you guys have experience with renweing your passport during the process?

PS: Don't worry. I'm not going to stay in the US after the wedding. I'm going home to Denmark to finish my education and wait for the visa process to run its course :)

Have you gotten a response from the IV unit yet?

It's "out of season" to have passports done so it shouldn't take you that long from applying until receiving the passport. A side note is that it took a week for mine(in Gentofte county) so if you have a couple of weeks after you get back from your trip you can renew it by then. Might be a good idea to scan your passport before applying for a new one, only because of the stamps in it.

The unique number on each page of the passport has to match the one in your application, at least that was what I was told so I simply decided to renew it when the time comes.

Have a great trip! :)

I got a new passport too, as my earlier passport held my ex-husband's name. I'll be carrying both with me for the interview, just in case.

It wont be any problem to go for interview with your new re-issue passport.

A week back I got my re-issue passport with added spouse name & address.

Just make sure to bring your old passport, new passport & its biographic page photocopies.

your passport bio page (copy) is collected at NVC.

Even if you have new passport by the time of interview, is ok - bring the old one and the new one to the interview - the iv staff will sort you out on interview day.

you are sneaking up on USCIS - if you'll have a look - the beneficiary's ID is not required, yet.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

That's if the OP can keep her old passport. In some countries (like mine) you are required to return it in order to obtain the new one.

Anyway, from the time you file I130 to the time you'll need to send a copy of your passport at NVC stage, there will be a while. Enough to have your passport renewed. If I were you, I'd renew it before sending DS230, just to make things simple.

I just had mine renewed to have my new married name added before sending the DS230.

I would get the new passport as soon as you can after you return from your marriage trip. That will give you at least 4 months to get the new one before DS230 is sent, as it is not part of the initial package. If you're name is changing with the marriage, change the name in the passport now too.

Exactly! They took my old passport. Furthermore, if there's a name change, it should be reported first to get a new SSN in DK, bringing documentation.

Oh, I didn't even see the replies here till now. Never did get an answer from the embassy  so, thanks!

Congrats on the wedding by the king himself :) Sorry the embassy didn't reply. Did you try contacting them through phone instead? I've only had positive and fast response but maybe that's because I - for the most part - already had a case there or it was on its way.

I have received fast and helpful replies for all other inquiries, I guess this one just slipped through somehow.

I'll bring my new and old passport to the interview, along with maybe proof of my name change - just in case.

We'll be sending off the first package on monday, hopefully :D

Your marriage certificate is all the evidence you need of a name change. You're filing the petition in the new married name, right???

For me, it isn't so simple. Since I am a Danish citizen and we got married in the US, changing my name is a seperate action that can't take place before I get a certified copy with an apostille stamp mailed from the US. Then I have to take it to 1) the local town hall (for official registration of the marriage in Denmark) and 2) the local minister who can officiate a name change. So, technically I still have my maiden name, and I have filled out all paperwork with that.

I plan to change my name and then my passport later during the process. I hope it will not be a problem, as there is really no other way around it - except waiting with the application, which is really not an option. It's bad enough that we have to wait so long to be together already!

After reading a few posts around the forum, I get the impression that I should use my married name for the i-130, as changing name midway can cause delays. Can put in my married name even if I haven't officially changed my name yet? Or should I wait it out till the whole process is over with? If so, what happens when I have to renew my passport (after the interview, before I enter the US) ???

Now I'm confused

(VJ doesn't allow me to edit my previous posts, so I'm adding here...)

To be more specific, we have not send in any of the paperwork yet, so there is still time to make then change if that is recommended. However, the marriage licence is in my maiden name, because in Nevada where we got married, name changes are not made simultaneously. So, if I do use my not-yet-official-married name on the i-130 form it will not be recorded or proven anywhere and probably won't be for at least another month before I can get the paperwork to Denmark.

What should I do?
