Hi everyone, I have found these forums to be very useful. I came to the US on a K1 visa got married on October 23rd and received notification of my adjustment of status and employment application a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I are kind of baffled as to whether I can get a SS, how to apply for it etc. It says on their website that I cant get one just for the purpose of getting a drivers license?? Can anyone shed any light on this matter, thank you very much!!

K1's are eligible for SSN's as long as there is at least 14 days left on their I-94. If your I-94 is already past that time, you will need to wait for your EAD or GC.

Please note you are not able to work without an EAD or GC. Whether or not you CAN get a licence depends on your state. Usually they require an EAD or GC because there's not enough time on an I-94.

You can get your SSN painlessly in Orlando. I'm a K1 from the UK, and I got mine just last week. Just plan to arrive REALLY early in the morning - it's a busy busy place. There's no postal option if your address is in Orange, Osceola or Seminole Counties. Your K1 will automatically entitle you to an SSN. And although it's not on the list of required documents, they were going to send me away for not having my birth certificate with me. Fortunately, I had it in my file in my car - so all ended happily!

Good luck!

Chris.
