Don't eat canned soups this winter

If you're looking for a hearty meal to warm you up as the temperature drops this winter, you may want to put down that can of soup and back away slowly.

Researchers at Harvard found that people who ate canned soups for five days in a row had 1,200 times as much of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in their bodies as those who ate fresh soups.

BPA has been linked to a wide array of health issues such as reproductive abnormalities, cancer, diabetes and heart disease, and is used in the lining of canned foods.

"Previous studies have linked elevated BPA levels with adverse health effects. The next step was to figure out how people are getting exposed to BPA. We've known for a while that drinking beverages that have been stored in certain hard plastics can increase the amount of BPA in your body. This study suggests that canned foods may be an even greater concern, especially given their wide use," said Jenny Carwile, a doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology at HSPH and lead author of the study.

Seventy-five study participants were split into two groups. The first group ate 12 ounces of Progresso brand soup every day for five days, while the other consumed fresh vegetarian soups. After two days off, the two groups switched. Reserachers found that the BPA levels in the bodies of the canned group soard to 1,221 percent of those in the fresh category.

The U.S. is considering following the lead of other countries and banning the use of BPA, but activists have accused Uncle Sam of dragging his feet.

Wow. That is so cool that you folks can whip up made-from-scratch soup from your locker when working double shifts. Y'all are awesome!

Seriously, don't be so snotty to those of us who don't always have time. (Soup is a great locker stash to keep on hand for when you absolutely can't take a real break or get stuck into the 3rd shift, or whatever.)
