I have a couple questions:

1. My husband briefly lived in Cancun for about 6 months a few years ago. Does he need to get a police record from Cancun?

2. Are certified copies ok to send to the NVC or do they need to be like the originals? My husband had to get a certified copy of his birth certificate in Mexico so we could get married. The civil registry office there required it, so that's the version we had translated. Now i"m starting to wonder if we should have had the one his mom got for him when he was born translated.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

1. It needs to be over 12 months for abroad residency and not visiting period. So no need.

2. NVC accepts certified copies issued by the original authority. Also they need a translation also - anyone can do it.

He lives in a city in Mexico and moved to Cancun for 6 months. I read that you need a local police clearance from cities you lived in in your country of residence for more than six months.

If Cancun is part of Mexico and if he resided (not visited) there for 6 months or more, then he needs one from there. Please hold off till another experienced Mexican answers this (for India we don't need local PCCs - just a PCC from the Passport Office).

A certified copy is the document that the relevant authority issues. As long as it is that very piece of paper that is submitted, you are good to go.

A Mexican beneficiary doesn't need Police Certificates at all. Ever. So don't bother because they won't even look at it. It says this in the instructions on the form, just read the fine print.

Copies of everything is fine and you really don't need to translate anything either because it's Spanish. If you're going to do it, then it shouldn't be a problem but it's not really needed. The one document that you might want to translate is the marriage certifiacte, but that's the only one that's worth the trouble.

You do want to make copies of originals though and I would recommend that you make them as nice and legible as possible. For the birth certificate, I think a certified copy would be fine so long as it looks just like the 'long' birth certificate (not just a little card). In any case, you don't really need his birth certificate until you go into your interview.

No.. that's not true. Even if he has a criminal history, they do not consider the Mexican Police Certificates as legit and therefore they are not required for anyone. at all, ever
