I'm filling out the I-129F and I'm encountering a lot of questions where I don't know if I should leave it completely blank, put N/A, or put None.

Does every blank space need to be filled in with N/A or None? (Even things like Apt.# if I don't have an apartment?) I am especially wondering about questions that say things like "A) Blah blah? -- B) If yes, explain." If I answer no, do I still have to put N/A's or None's in the explanation boxes that are for answering yes?

When should you use N/A and when should you use None?

I have tried using the I-129F example on this site, but it seems to be very random with the N/A and Nones. Like putting None in the name fields. Someone's name could be None (theoretically). And the military question says "Not in military service" instead of N/A or None.

try to read each question carefully if the appropriate answer is none then write none if the answer is N/A then answer N/A... it depends on the question.. your example of question regarding military... if your fiance did not ever serve the military the more appropriate answer is N/A because the question does not apply to your fiance...god bless on your journey!!!

Thank you. =)

So ones that say "If you are this, please answer the following" still need to be answered even if they don't apply to me (like the military one)? Or should they just be left blank?

Example:

11. Have you ever filed for this or any other alien fiance(e) or husband/wife before?

Yes [] No [X]

If "Yes," give name of all aliens, place and date of filing, A# and result.

[.....................................]

Do I need to fill in the "if yes" blank with N/A even though I marked "No?"

If you fill more complete, go ahead and put N/A. I think that is best.

I just remember the emphasis on "don't leave any line blank", in the papers I got from an independent counselor the first time I did this.

07/27/2011...........NOA1 received.

12/05/2011...........RFE received.

12/13/2011...........RFE response sent.

12/16/2011...........RFE RESPONSE received by Vermont S.C.

12/22/2011...........Teased by a text-message from uscis, saying they have received my response to the RFE.

12/30/2011...........LA VISA APROVADOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

01/12/2012...........Case Sent To Bogota Colombia, from the National Visa Center.

02/09/2012...........Schedule Interview.

03/23/2012...........Interview (to take place then)!

04/07/2012...........Arrived in USA.

07/01/2012...........MARRIED!

What next?

.......How the days DO slip away!

Do not leave blanks on the I-129f. Answer NA or "none" If you answered "NO" then the "if yes" blanks become "NA" Answer them with NA

People HAVE gotten RFEs for not filling in blanks and checking boxes and I am not prepared to tell you which to leave blank and avoid the possibility of an RFE for doing so.

Thank you =) Now that I have that established, I have a few questions about what should be none and what should be N/A.

Should fields that ask for names be N/A? Such as when it asks for names of prior spouses and I do not have any, should that be filled in as N/A or None?

I'm really confused about what answer would require None. It seems like almost everything would be better with N/A.

This is how I answered the questions regarding names on the I-129f:

7) Other names used: none

9) names of prior spoucse: none dates marriages ended: n/a

On the G-325A

Current Husband or wife: None

Former Husband or wife: None (I left the rest of that question blank, but somebody above stated that others have gotten RFE's for that - so if you feel more comfortable, put N/A for the rest).

I think those are the only questions regarding names on those two forms. :) I ordered a book for about $30 from amazon to supplement the guides on this site. I tend to use this site more than the book, but there are answers to questions such as "why n/a vs none" and other interesting information about the process. It also gives sample guides all the way through the process (including AOS).

Great, thank you. =) I think I understand this a little better now.

Has anyone ever called the visa helpline number to ask a question? I still need to figure out how to fit 2 middle names into the middle name box. =/

Typically, if you cannot fit an answer in a box, you would attach an extra piece of paper, label it clearly, such as "Question 3" (or whatever it is) and then put the answer, in the order they ask for on the original form. On the 129f form in the box, you can state: "Please see attached"

I did this for a few questions, however, I'm not sure if the same holds true for the name - perhaps somebody else will chime in :)

Well, "see attached" won't even fit in the box, so I'm stumped about that as well. And I don't want to write something that's not their name in a name box and have them think that IS their name... x_x I'm so confused.

I just want to say that I totally agree with this comment. I lost five months of my life waiting for a RFE, because I forgot to fill in the blank. The old saying when filing out any offical forms is to never leave anything blank. You should double and triple check everything before you send it on.

What about for something like this:

Is that N/A sufficient, or do I need to mark N/A in every single blank related to that question?

In all questions that don't apply to you you write N/A its quite simple really

You are definitely overthinking this. Either would work in this case. I have heard of RFEs for not answering a question (leaving it blank) which makes sense. I have NEVER heard of an RFE for a question answered "NA" or "None" asking for the other choice. If someone has, let us know.

I would suggest you also review the SAMPLE forms here at VJ, that may answer at lot of your questions
