I'm going home for Christmas (yay!) and I wanted to buy a Rosetta Stone package for my aunt so she can improve her English. BUT the very popular RS happens to be preeetty expensive. I was wondering if anybody here has any recommendation of English self-courses/packages just like the Rosetta Stone but cheaper? Perhaps one that your SO has used to improve their English skills when coming to the States? Thanks!

Haven't been in a while (frequented the site years ago) but they are pretty good (and free).

They give you 4 lessons. And imo each lesson plan covers a basic college semester (beginner 1....beginner 2....intermediate 1....intermediate 2).

They have an amazing way of teaching. You start off by listening to native speakers pronouncing the thing alongside a picture (so a picture of a sun and a native saying "sol").

Then you get the picture and you have to match it to the word "sol" (mixed with other words in that lesson).

Worth checking out.

Thank you! However, my auntie doesn't have internet at home, that's why I was looking for actual CDs/DVDs to give her.

On another note, I might make use of that website for myself. I've been wanting to brush up on my French for a while. I took 5 levels at the Alliance Française back home but dropped out before completing all the levels. Thanks again!

Check E-Bay.

I've bought several language programs for pennies on the dollar through auctions on that site.
