This brings up another issue. Prior to Radial Tires, everyone had Summer tires and Winter tires. Then they came out with Radials and the "All Season Radial". There are a lot of different "All Season Radials" on the market and none of them are any good for snow. They even have High Performance Snow tires which are useless on snow now. I know lots of people with 4 x 4's who have them just so they can drive in the snow. If the Tire Mfgs provided simple decent snow tires than many people wouldnt need AWD, 4WD to drive safely in the snow.

That is interesting. My parents live in Flagstaff, AZ (elev. 6,000ft) and the last car they bought is 4WD, but it's the Toyota Matrix - 4 cyl. - which still gets over 30mpg.

Somewhat connected to this is the prevalence of vehicles with automatic transmission in the American market. While those are easier to drive, a standard transmission allows the driver more control over a vehicle particularly in rough terrain and bad weather.

lazy! :o

seriously, a stick shift is more capable plus you get better gas milage. i know, most americans don't like them because they have to do something while driving other than put on makeup, talk on their cell, change radio stations, watch a dvd.
