So on July 22nd my wife applied for her SSN using her Employment authorization card she received. She brought in all her documentation (Marriage, Birth Certs, etc) and she answered all of their questions and submitted her application form. She was told by the lady that they would hold the application for 10 days pending an Immigration check or something (To make sure the records are updated). From that point it would take 2-4 weeks to receive the SSN card in the mail.

With all that said we have still not received her SSN card. We tried to both go to the office on Wednesday and they decided to change their hours from 8-4pm to 8-3:30pm without telling anyone and we got there at 3:40pm GRR!

Anyways, my wife went there yesterday with her GC in hand and all her other docs (Birth cert, marriage cert, etc) and she was told that the original application she filled out was not sent. She was told that since she was approved and has her GC in hand that she would automatically be sent a SSN card.

My question is: Is this accurate? Or is this guy blowing smoke? :help:

The guy is blowing smoke you have to apply for a SSN, Go to another office and demand to see a supervisor someone who knows what is going on this is BS. I got my SSN 3 weeks after my marriage and no EAD nothing just my marriage cert passport and I-94 and that was it. I got SScard in 3 weeks and then when I got GC i got the work authorization notation taken off no issue. SO many K1 and GC holders are having issues getting SSN and it's crazy. The problem with these offices is the staff do not know the rules or do they seem to be updated with procedures.

Nothing happens automatically. She will have to fill out an SS-5 application. Do it online and print it out. Then go back to the SSA office and submit it formally. If they tell you nonsense again ask for a supervisor.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

That guy is blowing smoke! When I applied for the first time the man behind the desk told me that he cannot process my application because I was already married. And I have to go to the immigration and have my married name registered. I did not believe it So I went home did my research and went to another office. I brought the same documents that I have presented before, I had my SS-5, birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport and I-94. Everything was examined and they have processed my application. The lady told me that I can come back after 7 working days and they can give me a letter showing my SS number. That's exactly what i did and was so surprise that they provided my SS number.

Less than 2 weeks later, I have my SS card. Take note, I applied without any EAD or GC in hand.

I thought so! Thanks all for the help. Im going to talk to them personally. Im gonna try another office and send in a formal complaint about the other office (Like it matters any). Thanks everyone.

This is really an issue because my wife has been turned down on several job offers because she has no SSN or DL. So sad that one lil card holds so much sway over someones life.

Thanks again all.
