Btw, Darren, I am offended by your post that most Americans pay for the medical. The K1/CR1 is just one of the many visas processed there, there are plenty of other immigrant petitions there (like the family-based ones that take a long time) and they pay for their medicals with their hard-earned cash. I paid for both my medical and visa fee, as well. And when I did my medical my fiance was sleeping and I just told him how it went afterwards.. I look like a foreigner but I was not hounded by peddlers, if you are kind to them and not act obnoxious they will even give great advice as they know the process by heart. You need to learn to take things with a grain of salt, seriously! This kind of behavior will not give you a happy life. Relax, be grateful for your blessings and let go of the nuances. It all worked out for you, you are so blessed, so count your blessings and move on. I wish you a happy married life!

Dear, dear. I find no joy in the recreational bashing. I can't be proud of a lynching. It's too easy and I look bad enough already without makin' fun of someone else.

What good can we make of this? The US State department has travel advisories for Americans in the Phillipines, and the upshot is "keep a low profile". Especially on Mindanao fer cryin' out loud. Your comportment. I am not saying Steve acted out of line - but that you are a target just by being an Americano. The State Department has stern warnings about MILF, Abu-Sayyef, NPA (No Permanent Address, hyuk), and plain old kidnap for ransom thuggery on Mindanao where your fiance is from most especially. Taxi gangsters in Manila. And the beggars. Yup. Pokin' ya in the side. The choking crowds. The pollution. Bureaucracy. Your Filipina beauty has a price.

So anyway, don't make a big drama out of perfunctory stuff. You get in line and lay low; don't demand special attention. That's why some of us recommended having her do this alone. There will be more instances of this kind of situation in the future. When you go to the Philippines. We are guests there. Think about some Mexican visitor to the USA writing those kinds of letters. i really think that your such a sweetheart since you accompanied your fiancee at saint luke's ITS VERY rare because when i was there no body accompanied thier fiancee's GOING THERE and HERE.anyways,,,your complaining about thier policy's and security gueards,these people is they are just doing they job,it does make sense to me when they dont allow people who is not involved with medical,that place isnt big enough for those who arent going for medical,i ALSO feel that you dont trust your fiancee for money,i feel bad with it,as other people say you can drop her off and go back to hotel,you know exactly that manila is so crowded and full of beggars,beggars is better than thieves,BACK TO TOPIC,you know exactly that you dont like this and that,hot crowded,why u stayed there infront of the building???there are plenty of option you can do.go to the mall have some coffee at star bucks,or have some massage or have lunch while waiting for her,you just simply put your self into complicated situation,

You are very familiar here in vj..don't get mad about our vjs posts as you asked our inputs and thought,I've been reading all your posts..here in vj there's only one thing I can tell you,I am not traying to compare you to my husband but some of your post is very unusual...my husband spent ten times money than you spent in philippines,,but after all I never heard him complaining.not even once,I gotta be carefull about what you were saying about philippines...as mostly of our vjs members here filipinos...be happy of what you are now,god bless u and your wife.

It depends where you go to and how you look like. If you look like Asian (Thai, Cambodian, Viet, Malaysian, Indonesian)then lucky you but If you're white and blonde, then forget it. Just learn how to say "WALA! or "AYOKO!". Don't carry money with you and don't be too nice.

The one thing I have learned never never to do with my fiancee.

Don't ever make a joke about a Filipino or ever god forbid make even the slightest comment that could stereotype Pinoy people in a negative fashion no matter how slight.

They say patience is a virtue, in the Philippines it is a requirement. Embrace it, strike up a

conversation with everyone else in line,,, meet a new friend or two. Once you learn you can't

fight the proverbial "City Hall" and win... You may find some peace.

Darren.. You are marrying your filipina soon and you ranting about the Philippine people is not only inconsiderate towards her, but totally embarassing for us Americans to be anyway associated with you, much less live in the same country.

I served in the US Navy and currently work for the DOD for the last 10 years. I was told when traveling to another country, always "RESPECT" their habits and their culture. People like you give us Americans a bad name. I would say it was good of you to go there to be with your fiancee to her physical and interview. I wished I have done that, but spending all the money to do that was unnecessary and she needed to learn independence. I'm proud of her and looking forward to having her here soon.

I have a story about UGLY AMERICANS... I was on my second trip to Cebu to see my fiancee when I encountered some at Gerry's Grill. There was two guys talking to these girls and pretty much trashing their country (doesn't say much about the girls since they just laughed about it)and they were talking pretty loud.They were at a table next to us and my fiancee and I were trying to eat dinner and they were talking too loud and getting on our nerves about the put-downs on the Philippines. I just stopped eating and started to stare at them. They asked me, "Can I help you ?" I said nothing to them. I kept staring at them until they realized they needed to tone it down.

Another time, my fiancee and I was walking in Ayala Mall near McDonalds when I saw a fat guy who really needed TWO chairs to sit on and he was talking to two girls in front of him, acting like a stud with his collar up. As we were walking by, he looked at my fiancee and shot me a "Go to Hell" look.. I stopped and asked him, "Who the hell you looking at ?" Of course, he was stunned and started stuttering.. The girls he was with started laughing and my girl was telling me to let it go and pulling me the other way.

We were at a resort in Mactan and there were kids and people on edge of the property trying get us to rent a boat or a jet ski from them. I was told not to do it by the staff at the resort, but I didn't mind giving them a few coins and having a chat with them. The economy is bad everywhere and we all need to make a living somehow. One of the guys tried to introduce me to his niece, but I already told him I was engaged. I talked to him in Visayan and he was shocked and tried to give me the coins back. I told him to keep it and he said, "You good Americano". I appreciated hearing that. Having two Filipina Aunts did help me understand the culture and the way of life there. I just hope all Americans can show some respect to the country they are visiting, even though we may not like or agree with what the people do there.
