Hi everyone...I just thought I might see if anyone wanted to share their likes/dislikes of Windows XP over previous Windows operating systems. I know most of you have probably had it for a long time now--we have as well--but, now that you have, what have you noticed that has been better or worse than previous editions?

I'm writing a very short essay about XP, and I don't have long, but just thought I would throw this out there...respond if you feel like it! :) Thanks! :) M.

Previous editions dislike = instability

XPlikes = stability / ease of use..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Thanks! :) I have a bunch of notes, but I wanted a few "real" user opinions... (I guess the reviews aren't by 'real' people??) ;) M.

Windows XP has been around so long I forget the older versions but I do remember that on previous versions of Windows WIN9x / Me etc you could run games easy like Duke Nukem 3D but on XP you can not. You need newer games.

Also, it eats up more memory than before but it is a lot more stable than it was.

So PRO Win XP = More Stable

Anti WinXP = Loss of compatibility and need for a faster PC.

Thank you...that's good to hear from one of the, again, "real" users, as one review I read said the gaming was vastly improved...you could play most older games, etc.

Most all reviews are in favor..and, of course, it IS better in most ways...but I'm trying to portray both the good AND bad. M.

easier to add stuff to the computer due to the plug and play part of xp. win 95 you had to edit command.com and config.sys along with having a driver disk blah bleh real pain in the neck.

although that got me into writing batch files for certain configurations which i still do today.

Hmm, been so long since I have used the previous editions. I believe I went from Windows 98 to XP. I have found XP to be a lot more stable, more adaptable to plug'n'play devices, dont have to go search for a CD to install many, but other than that not much. I'm not a big time gamer, just surfing the net and utilizing MS word.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

WinXP is a serious memory pig. it eats up over 8gig on install due to multiple loading of startup and sys files in 2 different locations. the dll files are SUPPOSED to be called up and used in memory when needed, they are just loaded into memory constantly. after all the updates to WINXP (and still going and continuous) Windows takes up over 12gig of my HD now. It installs on the system and opens up every port available just in case you "want to use them" when the average home user doesnt even know what ports are.

Linux OS I can install on the HD in under 6Gig of space... the latest updates and patches for OpenOffice even, is still under 8 gig, and I have all the functionality and ease of use as windows without the fear that anypage that has an ActiveX component will give my system a virus.

the big difference between Windows system and Linux system is simple. its games. Windows has the major market in that regard so most games are written for the Win OS.. although Linux does have a few, it will probably be a while before companies specifically write PC games to the Linux OS.

hard drive space isn't memory

it does require lots of ram to run, i'm upgrading mine to 512 mb this week as i'm tired of the low memory notices.

i jumped from win 95 to xp btw.

Wow, now THAT's a dif. opinion from anything I've read...thanks! M.

Pretty much the opinion that everyone who I've ever met who has used Windows 2000 has IMHO. Win2K was the best OS that Microsoft ever released. The only reason XP looks good to most people is they went straight to it from 98, or *shudder* Windows ME.

ME sucked. i've run into some who claim the last edition of 98 was the best one though.

I believe the OP was asking for comparisons between Windows XP and other Windows OSs, not Linux. Otherwise I'd be singing the praises of Mac OS X over XP. ;)

ME sucked. i've run into some who claim the last edition of 98 was the best one though.

98 Second Edition was the best version of the old "DOS" based Windows, for sure. Its not a patch on Win 2K or the current XP as an OS though.
