I received my EAD last week, and I've been perusing the internet for teaching jobs in CA. I'm not overly hopeful for a full time job at this point in the year, but I would like to be able to substitute.

Apparently most teaching jobs go through EdJoin.org now, but it is kind of confusing if you've never used it. I can't really find subbing jobs on there.

Does anyone know if that's because they haven't been listed, or if there is some trick I don't know about?

I have searched the website high and low, and can't figure out how to apply for the substitute list!

I've also been searching CraigsList, Monster, etc.

I should add that I don't have a full California credential, or at least not yet, because my degrees and Canadian teaching license are still being evaluated. I have taken the CBEST, and still waiting for the results. So my options for now are a fulltime or PT at a private school not requiring a credential, or subbing at public schools.

I just don't know how to get on the sub list!

Go to the school district web site to find the employment area. Where I work they have all the teaching positions including subs listed. Call the districts in your area to see how this is done. We have an H R department that works with people as well. However I am not in Ca.

Yeah, I've searched all the school districts' websites. They just redirect to EdJoin. But thanks, it was a good try :)

Thanks Nigeriaorbust... I found those listings earlier, but thought they couldn't possibly be all the sub jobs available. There are hundreds of schools per school board, so I just thought there might be a bigger sub list than there appears to be.

I'll keep looking.

Thanks :)

Hi CBM!

Which part of CA. are you from?... I know that in Orange County, most districts will allow substitutes to fill out an application and when you have all of the prerequisites, then most likely, they will automatically add you to the sub. list and they will start to call you to work.

In terms of subbing, you need a 30-day Emergency Permit, which allows you to only sub. If you want to actually teach, you'll need to get an actual credential.

Hopefully, your Canadian credential will carry over to California, if that's the case, then you would have a better chance of getting a full-time position.

Your best bet is to go to either go to the districts that's closest to you or call them and ask them if you can speak with an HR person about subbing.

Good luck!

I don't know if things have changed since I substituted in the San Francisco Unified School District. I went down to the administrative offices and applied through them. At least, if you go in person, they can tell you what is the proper procedure at the present time. Seems to me that even if you end up obtaining positions through the online service, you would still need to initially apply directly at the district office and follow proper procedures, such as finger-printing, orientation, etcetera. San Francisco had a computer call service, where they would call you or you could call them to find out what jobs were available that day or week.

What area of California? My hubby and I are in San Diego. He is currently subbing as he hasn't completed his credential yet. In order to substitute in a certain district, he had to go sign up at the district office. They will give you a number that you can use to sign in to their districts website. And a phone number that you can call for available jobs. Also, when you sign up with your phone number they can call you. I've heard my hubby talk about edjoin, but not exactly sure how it works. All I know is that you have to be signed up with the district. I do know that he is signed up for two districts and has only gotten three jobs the past three weeks. Now, down here, most districts don't start until after labour day, although I know one that started two weeks ago. At the beginning of the year, there aren't usually as many jobs because teachers aren't taking time off yet. Hopefully as it gets later in the year, it will pick up more.

Also, someone previously said something about getting a 30-day emergency credential. This is true, you have to get that before you sub. I believe it's good for a year and it just means you can't acccept any positions that are longer than 30 days. When you sign up for a district, you will have to show them your 30-day credential.

Hope that helps!
