There are 2 vacancies and I believe 1 non-voting member from Wash-DC.

Ok, I found out why the magic number is 216. I was only partially right.

Normally 218 votes constitute a majority of the 435 members of the House.

...

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) will not make it back for the vote because he is recovering from colon cancer surgery.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) is recovering from an assassination attempt, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) resigned due to a sexting scandal and Dean Heller (R-Nev.) is now a senator having replaced Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), who resigned in disgrace.

Don't confuse that old man with real math based on actual numbers.

That is actually kind of sad, if true.

The right wingers and the left wingers are all upset. Their respective propaganda machines are already in full swing against this arrangement. The longer you let these propaganda machines churn, the more votes they will peel off the agreement working their way from the edges towards each other. Give them a week and they'll have enough votes peeled away for this to fall through. With that, a next agreement won't be any easier to hammer out.

Debt Ceiling is Raised Before Tea Party Understands What It Is

GOP Begins Hard Work of Creating Next Crisis

WASHINGTON – In an historic eleventh-hour bipartisan accord, the United States’ debt ceiling was raised Sunday night before the Tea Party understood what it was.

In an effort to gain as many Tea Party votes as possible, the debt ceiling bill was drafted entirely in one-syllable words, congressional aides said.

But even as the final agreement was being put to bed, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urged his Republican colleagues not to rest on their laurels: “Now, let us begin the hard work of creating the next crisis.”

According to those close to the negotiations, the GOP in Congress were under pressure to get a deal done before the observance of the official Republican holiday, Shark Week.

Additionally, the Chinese government had warned that if the U.S. defaulted on its Treasuries, China was prepared to take full ownership of Washington and rename it Wang Chung.

In the end, though, Sen. McConnell said the Republicans stood to benefit the most from striking a deal that warded off financial calamity: “We deserve full credit for finding the antidote, even though we were the ones who administered the poison.”

That's a total of 230 aye. I don't think it will be more than 220.

I just saw Nancy Pelosi say she is going to vote for it, and I heard some Tea Partyers say they would also vote for it. I'm sticking to my numbers, but I'm starting to think it might be higher.

After seeing a bit more of the bill, I'm going with these numbers-

Republicans- 180 y, 60 n

Democrats- 50 y, 143 n

Well, I slightly underestimated the Republican NAYs, but I well underestimated the Democrat YEAs.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
