Hi everyone. First post! My fiancee is from Galati, actually. I am trying to learn Romanian at the moment and thankfully it is similar to Spanish, with which I have had a formal education. The reason is that her parents do not speak English, and I would like to speak a few things to them (and at least understand enough to discern if her sister is gossipping ;) ).

I was lucky enough to work in Romania long ago, just for a few weeks. From Cluj, to Sibu, Brasov, and Bucharest, stopping here and there to admire the natural beauty of the country. And soon I will return to recapture that beauty, but this time with my beautiful lady in hand.

It seems the Romanians that I have spoken with, overall, give a very mixed review in their opinions of the US. Some have a very good opinion. Others think that it is a land of milk and honey on the surface but a sham underneath. Also, the history of our foreign policy becomes a point of contention, even among themselves.

So the question I throw out to the readers of this topic: when your fiance(e)'s parents discovered they were marrying an American, and moving to the US, what was there reaction?

I'll go first: her parents would have liked us to live in Romania, but the aspirations for good employment made sense for us to go to the US. They were sad about the distance, but obviously happy that their daughter had found a special person in her life. So at least in this case, the idea of America, or of an American son-in-law, proved neither positive nor negative in their reaction.

I am curious to hear your stories.

My fiances parents were thrilled he was finally getting married!! :) hes picky, they didnt think hed ever find one good enough for him. They ofcorse wanted me to live in Romania, and raise our son there, but are just as happy with us in the US, they said as long as we are happy where we are and go visit them yearly.

My best experience in Romania was at his moms house. :) I love his family soooo much!!!

Well my husbands mom-- I don't think she was very happy. When she found out that he was going to move here in US,,with me and that I was not the one who was moving there she was speechlessssss.SHe still hopes that we are going to move back to Romania...I doubt it though. She loves her son as much as any mother does and I do not blame her for wanting her son close. :) Otherwise, they all think that his life here is better with many more opportunities, they don't have a realistic image of how living here is, they think we have all the money we want here , and its not true.....

that video was AWSOME !!! :)

maybe now other countries wont see us anymore as the land of gipsies and abandoned children.

im romanian, my husband is american, and we plan to move to romania for good in about 2 years! he likes it more there than here in the states ! :) and to be honest, so do i .

i have a question for you, if you can help me...after obtaining a tourist visa for USA (we're trying to get my mom over here for a short visit) can my mom use it after, lets say, 6 months? or it becomes invalid if she doesnt use it after a certain amount of days / months ?
