Yes, go to the courthouse and ask for a certified copy of your marriage certificate. When you'd get it depends on the place. We had ours the same day but I'm sure other places have a bit of a wait. Won't know until you ask, right?

Go back to the court house with the marriage license and they will issue you the marriage certificate, at least that's what we did.

In Mississippi, it cost $15 for the first copy and $5 for any additional copies you need.

When we got married the Judge and two witnesses signed the marriage certificate and then the judge told me to file it with the County Clerk's office within a certain amount of time. Once signed it becomes the official marriage certificate. Since we were at the courthouse and the clerk's office was still open we filed the marriage certificate and I received six (6) certified copies right then and there. About two weeks later the original marriage certificate was received in the mail. I would go to the courthouse and see where your original marriage certificate is. It is possible that the USPS returned it or did something else with it. No one in government uses certified mail, but they always recommend that we send it some trackable way--why don't they?!?!

Sorry for the rant.

Hope you get it soon,

Dave

they took our marriage license i never got it back :( ... :S that is so weird ugh i hope it wont make problems... also his I-94 expired in June. he already has his social security card. his ID... we got married a month later after his arrival so that 90 day marriage requirement is fine.... and his K-1 visa in the passport expires in August 24.. i am not sure what that AOS problem is when visas expire.... some people applied for AOS two years late after their arrival... how does that work.. did we have to apply for AOS before his I-94 expiration or just get married and have his SSC before the expiration

^^ Marriage license and marriage certificate are two very different things. Doesn't surprise me that 'they' took your marriage license.

K1 requirement is that you marry within 90 days of the alien's entry. It is best to apply for AOS as soon as possible after marriage, but if that isn't feasible - just make sure the alien does not work or leave the US.
