I've been studying for the written test, will it be possible for me to write the test as soon as I arrive in the US before I get my green card and social security number?

Thanks.

every state is different I suggest you look up the requirements for the state you will be living. My husband was able to do it before he got his green card but it would have expired when the I94 expires which is the 90 day mark so we just waitied until he got his greencard. good luck to oyu  Just noticed your coming in on IR1/CR1 so it may be different for you my husband came in on a K1

Thanks for the response. guess I was just being lazy. I just checked the CA DMV site and the stamp in my passport at POE should be fine:

<LI>"Processed for I-551" stamped in a valid foreign passport

Last time I looked you needed ID and SSN. My husband is Canadian and doesn't have to take the road test, since he has a valid Canadian license. I don't know if that will be the same for you.

I went to DMV and said that my ssn hasn't arrived yet. They told me that I can't do the written test before I get my social security number. So had to wait until got my ssn (you can get it faster by going to the social security office - it took 2 weeks for me to get my ssn after POE, but card arrived by mail little less than 3 weeks, so you might win a week by visiting the office.)

So according to my experience, no, unfortunately you have to wait for your SSN before doing your written test and behind the wheel. And I'm from CA, so at least this is what happened in my local DMV.

Oops, he won't be happy to hear that. I was sure I had read somewhere that Canadians didn't have to. Oh well...

every state has different rules..

We're in California. I just went looking and found a reference about how "now" Canadians have to take the road test. So maybe I found old information before. I'm sure he'll do ok. It's not like Canadians have many different driving rules than us, we just have a lot more traffic.

I'm just out of the DMV where I failed my first written test (it's only fair since I hadn't even read the handbook once) :content:

So: you need your SSN to apply, hence to take the written test. You don't need your GC, if it hasn't arrived yet, they're fine with your machine readable immigrant visa (I suppose I94 for K1 applicants?).

Once you have passed the written test you:

- get a learner's permit if you have never had a driving license before (you can only drive with someone who has their license sitting next to you).

- get a temporary permit if you have a license from another country (you can drive by yourself).

In both cases, you'll need to take the behind the wheels test to get the driving license. The waiver for the driving test is only for people who have a license from another State.

Don't think that being an experienced driver in your own country means you'll pass the written test easily: there are some questions that you can't possibly know the answer to without reading the handbook (ie how long do you have to report that you sold your car, etc...). If your English is not sufficient, you can take the test in your native language (I saw someone today taking it in Japanese).

You can get a hard copy of the handbook at the DMV, but you can also find a pdf version, as well as online tests to practice, on their website: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/home/dmv.htm
