So I have a few questions here, and not sure what forum to put them in, but figured the Canadian one would be a good place to get responses from people who may have similar situations, so:

1) I've just finished up my work in Vancouver, with a Fiance Visa interview scheduled for June 7th. With loads of wedding plans to finalize and no work for the next two weeks, would it cause any problems to cross the border to visit my fiancee in Seattle to help with the planning? It's a 2 hour drive south, and I have nexus and have crossed every 2 weeks since filing my I-129f without problems. I know Canadians can enter the States for up to 6 months without a visitor Visa, but I just wanted to know if going down and spending the entire 2 weeks until June 6th in Seattle might cause problems at my interview?

2) Since finishing work, and knowing I cannot get paid for work in the States while on the Visa until I get my EAD papers or green card post marriage, would it cause any problems if I were to volunteer or work as an unpaid intern? I've been offered an unpaid intership position with a consulting company, and wondering if by accepting it, I would violate the terms of my Visa and AOS once married?

Thanks guys, any responses would be greatly appreciated. Only 2 weeks to go until my interview!

Answer to #1 is thats its up to the POE officer. Most have no problems at all, ensure u have ties to canada-------proof of ur interview would be super---but it is all up to the POE officer. This same question has been asked 1000's of times here on VJ, so a simple search should find you many results, but no 1 is going to say 100% for sure you will gain entry. Best of luck. Cheers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sorry, what I meant in question 1 was whether or not it would cause problems with the interviewer (ie has anyone had experiences with the interviewing officer after visiting so often in the states?). I'm not too concerned with the POE officer as they pretty much just wave me through nexus as I've been travelling down to Seattle just about every weekend over the past 4 months for wedding planning and what not.

My guess is it won't be a problem at all, but my thought process is better safe than sorry, as I'd really hate to get declined for the visa with the wedding in 6 more weeks!

Of bigger concern was question 2 relating to volunteer work, and whether or not I need the EAD forms for that. If anyone could help with that, that would be great. I'd hate to lose my status due to a technicality like that, while not even being paid for the work.

1) I go back and forth all the time, spent 6 weeks in Hawaii this winter, a week in N Carolina at Christmas etc. Plus once a month for general travel.

I have a "Parole" which you get at the US Border, bring all your paperwork with you, ties to Canada etc, (too much is better then not enough). It costs about $70, we got mine for 6 months, I still get lots of questions (sometimes) when I cross but I smile nd answer them all truthfully and off I go.

I had my USC spouse with me and I am unsure if this is a requirement, pls check on it yourself.

Good Luck!

You cant volunteer to work free in a normally paid position. If it's a non paid position / activity that would likely be ok.

Good luck with your interview!

I was in the US for several days just before my interview in Montreal. My fiance (now husband) and I flew up to Montreal together for the interview. We had no problems at the interview. They did ask if I ever had issues crossing the border into the US at the interview, and the answer was no...(we saw each other about every 3 weeks). You will likely need the time before the interview to get all the papers organized (I remember there were a LOT of them for the interview!).

I don't believe there are any rules absolutely against unpaid internships, but it can get complicated (ie, depending on your field of work there may be tax implications as well as insurance issues for the company involved). I looked into this and couldn't find anything absolutely saying "no," but did not want to make things complicated in the event we had to interview for AOS (which we didn't, in the end), so decided against a volunteer position/unpaid internship...it was nice to have a little bit of a vacation in the end!

I do not know the answer to this, but you may want to look into what the rules for having Nexus are. I think you may have to report any changes in your situation (ie, pending visa application) to them.

Re #1: why would it cause problems? You're not doing anything illegal. In fact, it gives more credence to the fact you're a legitimate couple in that you're putting this level of effort into your wedding. I don't see how it would look suspicious or problematic.
