Hi. We are really excited, because our EAD card is being produced 6 days after our biometrics appointment. My question is simple: My wife has a social security card (marked "not valid for employment"). Does she have to wait for the EAD card to come in, or can she begin to look for work now?

Also, I just thought about this. What about her social security number? Does the "not valid for employment" matter anymore? I hear you get your updated SS card after you are approved for your green card. Would I need to go to the SS office and get it changed once the EAD comes in? Is it a diffcult process?

hi!!

I got my EAD after 8 days since my biometrics, also I had ssn number before with the "valid for work only with DHS authorization"

I went to ss office to change my name (I change my maiden name for my married name) ,the number is still the same and the "alid for work only with DHS authorization" remains in the card, that can be removed only with the green card.

the process in the social security office is pretty simple and fast , I took with me: passport,EAD,old social security card and certificate of marriage.

good luck!!1

Thanks for your response. Does this mean that she cannot work until she receives her green card and is able to change her SS card, or does the EAD effectively eliminate her non-validity on her SS?

I think with the EAD the ss office can remove the not valid for employment condition..but I'm not 100% sure. go to ss office with all your papers and if your wife already has a job offer ask if they can wait until you get your new social security card

good luck!!!!!!!!

The 'Not Valid for Employment without DHS Authorization' has to stay on the SS card until the GC is received. The good news is that the EAD is that authorization. If her name was changed due to marriage, she should update her SS card with her married name which will need to match the EAD.

(My wife did this today.)

Her card does not say anything about DHS authorization. It just says "not valid for employment". Would this change anything?

Yes, that needs to be changed and they can do it with the EAD. What visa did she adjust from?

Hi!

In our case, we received our EAD a week after card production was ordered. Your wife can begin looking for jobs until she receives it. I changed my SS card with the green card and it took 3 days from the day I applied till I got it in the mail. Pretty fast.

So, your wife can work with the EAD card and she can change her SS with the green card. The number will remain the same. Good luck!

2-7-11 - Day 0 -sent AOS package (concurrent filling)

2-11-11-Day 4 - received text message from USCIS with the receipt number

2-18-2011 - Day 11[/font]- received NOA 1 in mail for I-130, I-485, I-765, I-131

2-22-2011 -Day 15- received biometrics letter -appt March 14

3-10-2011- still cannot see case online although I called USCIS two days ago

3-14-2011- Day 35- Biometrics done on the appointment day

3-24-2011-Day 45-case showing up online!!!! USCIS mailed on 3-23 my interview appt letter- April 26 is the day!

3-26-2011-Day 48-Received interview appt letter

4-1-2011-Day 59- USCIS mailed I-131 approval and ordered production of my new card (I assume the combined EAD/AP)

4-11-2012-Day 69- received EAd&AP combo in mail! Bad picture!

4-26-2011-Day 84-APPROVED!!! Card production ordered!

4-30-2011-Day 88-Welcome to America letter received

I'm just hoping that once the EAD comes that she can work. Money is getting tight, and we are budgeting until she can work. Once she receives her EAD, how long does it take to fix her SS card? We do not have to wait for the GC I hope.

My wife was told it could be 2-4 weeks to receive her new card but I think they always say that to keep people from calling too soon...

The truth is, according to the I-9 instructions, the EAD is a List A document and can stand alone. As long as she has a SS #, she should be OK to work with just the EAD and knowing her SS#.

That's what I was hoping to hear. It gets tough living on 1 income after awhile.
