Hi everybody! My visa interview is getting closer and closer and i'm getting paranoid!

I went to get my police certificate and the guy there told me that if i want to marry a US citizen i also need to get a "Certificate of Freedom to marry", (he called it "Nulla osta dal Comune"), something that can prove that i have never been married before. Is that true?? On the instructions they only talk about "Termination of marriage documents".

Thanks in advance! :)

So, to get this far you have already sent in an intent to marry letter that your fiance sent in for you to start this process. The only other thing that I am aware of is a sworn statement that says you will lose your visa process if you get married before you apply for admission to the US.

Check your consulate website for any further specific instructions just to make sure. I am sure you would have read something before now while preparing all the tons of documents we have to prepare for the interview.

Good Luck

I have never heard such nonsense. When your fiance petitioned for you you both sent letters of intent to marry withing the 90 days and you are both free to marry. You do not have to prove that you have never been married only prove that if you have you are legally divorced and free to marry.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Married only 2 years 1 month

But would the requirement be if they were going to be married in her country??

This is a K1 application and not a spousal. The marriage will take place in the US, therefore, governed by US laws and not the beneficiary's country laws.

However, I digress and stand by my earlier post, look for more information. Even email the consulate with your question. I had to email the consulate in Rio de Janeiro with a specific question and they replied promptly and answered it specifically. Better to be safe than sorry.

Good Luck

Ale, the Nulla Osta serves only if you marry in Italy. It is not required for the K-1 visa interview.

Thank you! :) That makes me feel better! I read that getting married in Texas is pretty easy, you just need a valid I.D.

The same guy also told me that my police certificate needs to be legalized ("apostilla"), i didn't really believe him but they are doing it just to be safe.

Thank you all again! :)
