Hoping that someone else will find this helpful:

Since I kept getting an error message trying to print form DS-157 I tried an alternative PDF reader and not only am I now able to print but I can save the forms (including the boxes I've filled in) and can insert text boxes which means that it is possible to give enough space to insert full father's address (where the original form only have one line versus 2 lines for mother's address).

The name of the program is Foxit Reader (a geeky friend had recommended that to me a couple of years ago, but I hadn't bothered installing it on the my new machine) and can be downloaded for free on http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/addons.php

To insert text boxes (where you can also select the font size, making it possible to squeeze in a few extra characters) you want to turn on the "typewriter" and the "format" toolbar.

And if you're like me and get it filled in way in advance don't forget to check it's still the most current version of the doc before you send it ;)

On our petition I neatly wrote what didn't fit, the petition was approved.

I like foxit, reference in the NVC EP wiki page (I loathe adobe)

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
