a) the amount on my employer letter (pre tax)

b) the amount on my tax transcript (post tax)

I exceed the requirements regardless of what number I use.

I'm just not sure which is the correct one to put on the form.

Most folks will use the amount you did/will enter on Line 22 of your tax return (this may/may-not be the same as your employment letter).

If you use the number from the tax transcript then it should be the total income number, or adjusted gross income if you filed a 1040EZ. This would be especially true for someone who is self-employed, since their gross income (called "gross receipts" on Schedule C) is often much higher than their total income because of deductions for business expenses. You couldn't support someone with money you spend on your business, so the IRS (and consequently USCIS and DoS) presume that your total income is what you have to live on, and is the basis from which your taxes will be determined.

Total income is pre-tax income.
