Driving in US a month after visa expired

Hello!

My friend came here with a J-1 visa that expires on June 30th and so will her driving license. She will go back to her country but she would like to visit more of the US after June 30 when her work contract expires and has more time to tour around. We know that you have a month to leave the country after your visa expired, but can she drive in the US with the expired driver license during that month? Does anyone have a link to an official website that deals with this?

2-7-11 - Day 0 -sent AOS package (concurrent filling)

2-11-11-Day 4 - received text message from USCIS with the receipt number

2-18-2011 - Day 11[/font]- received NOA 1 in mail for I-130, I-485, I-765, I-131

2-22-2011 -Day 15- received biometrics letter -appt March 14

3-10-2011- still cannot see case online although I called USCIS two days ago

3-14-2011- Day 35- Biometrics done on the appointment day

3-24-2011-Day 45-case showing up online!!!! USCIS mailed on 3-23 my interview appt letter- April 26 is the day!

3-26-2011-Day 48-Received interview appt letter

4-1-2011-Day 59- USCIS mailed I-131 approval and ordered production of my new card (I assume the combined EAD/AP)

4-11-2012-Day 69- received EAd&AP combo in mail! Bad picture!

4-26-2011-Day 84-APPROVED!!! Card production ordered!

4-30-2011-Day 88-Welcome to America letter received

5-4-2011-Day 92 - received green card in mail (8 days after the interview) - it is kinda green!!!!

If she has a US driver's license in her name, she cannot drive with it if it's expired. If she gets pulled over, the cop will scan it and she'll be in big trouble. In California (don't know about other states' policies as DL law is state law),she'd get a fine and a fix it ticket to bring her license up to date.

If she never had a US DL, she could drive on the license of her home country, just like a tourist, but once she's in the computer, she's in there as long as computers have a memory.

After her visa expires, she has 30 days to stay and tour around is a mis-conception unless specified.

After her visa expires and she is in the oucntry she is aquiring time as illegal resident, no she cannot drive with her expired driving lic. If she is renting a car none of the rental company would rent her car. If she is driving a personal car, none of the insurance company would insure her.

So she is looking at more and more trouble, no lic, no insurance and if she gets pulled over its nothing but trouble.

10.28.2010 - Biometrics appointment received, dated 10/22 - set for 11/19 @ 3:00 PM
11.01.2010 - Successful biometrics walk-in @ 9:45 AM; EAD card sent for production text/email @ 2:47 PM! I-485 case status now available online.

According to the State Department, F-1 students are allowed additional time in the US if they have completed their studies. But she wouldn't be allowed to drive, unless she can somehow get her license renewed.

F1 gets additional time on OPT, which means they are still on F1. She is not on F1 and as per the new regulation they would issue one a DL only until they have valid visa - when their visa expires their DL also expires.

There is no grace days.... she has to leave the country before the date stamped on her I-94.

My mistake J1 does have 30 day Grace period, so she can stay for additional 30 days. :)
