Bank of America in Texas requires state ID. I think it depends on the state where you reside. An Italian friend of mine opened his in New York without a state ID, nor SSN only showing his credit card (obtained from Italy) and eventually converting it. In Texas, it's more strict, without an ID one can't open any type of account nor convert credit cards.

Try calling several banks, ask them if they do credit card conversion and if yes, that would lead you to opening a joint account.

JP Morgan-Chase Bank will let you open joint account with out having the SSN.

Yep, we were able to open a joint account with Chase the week my husband arrived on his K-1. You just need your passport (with the visa) and we used our lease as proof of residence (I put him on the lease the day he arrived). We ran into a minor paperwork issue. After they opened his account and he had been using his debit card for a few days we received some tax paperwork in the mail. We brought it in and it seemed to just be a mistake on their part, and we were fine from that point forward. He tried to add his SSN to the account once he received it, but for some reason they refuse to add it until he has his green card.
