Hello everyone, new to the forum. I never thought I would be involved in a long distance relationship but sometimes life throws you a curveball :) I am a US citizen and he is Costa Rican. Any information on the K1 visa process would be greatly appreciated, especially a realistic timeline and cost? What information would I need to file a petition? How much money is it going to cost for all the paperwork? Any information on work permits, I understand he must apply for that after he has received the visa and has come here....would I need to prove that I can support the both of us even if he had a large amount of cash? Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated, I'm especially interested in how many months this could take since we want nothing more than to be together as soon as possible. Thank you everyone in advance :)

The best way to start the process is to study it. From beginning to end. Read the K1 guide here on VJ - under the "guide" link at the top of the page. Then download all the necessary forms and their instructions, and read them carefully. You will start by filing the form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancee.

According to visajourney timelines, it takes 6-7 months to get the I-129F approved. After that your fiancee can enter the US, and you need to get married within 90 days from that. Once you are married, you will file the I-485 form to adjust his status to legal permanent resident.

The filing fee for I-129F seems to be $340, plus costs from medical examination. I-485 fee plus biometrics fee is a total of $1,070.

I am not a K1 applicant, but the best advice I can give in this matter is to read the guides and the instructions, and read posts in these forums about the K1 process. That is the best way to familiarize yourselves with the entire process and all that it entails.
