Bringing laptops to Vietnam

I'd like to bring a laptop to Vietnam as a gift. The one she has is really old and I'd like to give her a better model. However the problem is I need to take a laptop with me for remotely connecting to work. Which means I would be bringing in two laptops. I know Vietnamese customs will let one in, but as a tourist I'm wondering if they would flag me with two laptops and make me pay a duty on the second laptop.

lol .... there you go you have one answer.

Second option which I know works in India might work there too. You can tell one is gift and second is you will be taking it back and they will put on your passport the laptop you will be taking back and when you leave they match comment on your passport you will be taking the laptop back with you to US.

When I brought two into VN a few years ago they never said a thing. They were side by side in my bag. So perhaps they saw that as one machine in the xray.

They don't care. I had 2 with me 3 months ago and the only question they asked was "Did you bring any iPhones or iPads to sell?" I said only for personal use and they waved me through. They clearly saw the laptops in the xray. No coffee money as asked for or exchanged.

Two years ago, just after Christmas, I brought a new Lenovo laptop for my wife. It was gift wrapped and loaded into a box with other wrapped gifts, and checked in as luggage. The big box had been opened when I picked it up from the baggage carousel in HCMC. When I later opened the box at Phuong's house I found that the gift wrap on the laptop had been opened at the end, apparently for inspection. I was not asked to pay any duties or fees, and no questions were asked when I went through immigration or customs. It might have been a different story if I was Viet Kieu.

I also had my own personal laptop in my carry-on backpack.

The difference comes into play if you are viet kieu... or appear gullable... Not saying that viet kieu are gullable... just that they focus on those two groups... I never had an issue and have brought laptops, three iphones at one trip, router, etc and it all went smooth... dont be surprised if they try to hit you with 100 bucks per laptop

it's not typically viet khieu. If you look asian they'll coffeee your as-s. Even with 1 laptop they'll coffe you. Happen last sept when my dad went. The dude that runs the Tan Son Nhat said he don't approve of it and provide 3 phone numbers hotlines if that happen but hell those phone numbers aren't even available anywhere.

I brought 2 laptops two seperate times and had them both in the same laptop bag that was carry on with NO problems. Dont sweat it, you will be fine. Jerome

i think they target the easy marks. most white people wouldn't get hassled because of the language barrier and it could get complicated. i've had a case where i brought 2 and had nothing happen and another where i gave them $10 and kept walking when they said something. they wanted $20 but if you said that's all the change you got and go they're not going to flag you back and make a big scene.

When my wife returned to Vietnam last year she had two laptops. No problem. Next month she visits her family in Saigon and will have a laptop, an ipad and two iphones. Her cousin works at the airport and will be sure to work the day she is due to arrive in case there is any trouble.
