getting a cheap flight?

1. You may want to search for round-trip flights, even if you plan on going one-way. Sometimes they are cheaper. Just make sure you cancel the return flight once you get into the U.S.

2. Decide if you want a direct flight or can deal with stops. That makes a difference in cost.

3. Go directly to the airline websites, don't use general search sites. They usually have fees built in and don't give you all the available options.

Some rates I found:

American right now is $829.10 for a round-trip with a layover in Chicago. (Over $1150 for a one-way)

United has a $828.50 flight also round-trip with a Chicago layover.

kayak.co.uk is the site I use to search for my tickets. Plus they don't charge you or make you sign up, they just direct you to the airline selling the ticket. Saves you checking every airline.

Continental through Houston to Dallas Love Field

1 Adults (age 18 to 64) 343.00 GBP

Additional Taxes/Fees 129.33 GBP

Total Price 472.33 GBP

That was at continental.com

April 4-14. Pick any cheap return with connections or whatever because you're cancelling the flight anyway.

search boxes LHR to Dallas, TX (DAL - Love Field)

Houston to Dallas is a short 55 minute flight. Even if you book something with a short layover and miss your connection (POE), the express jets leave for Dallas every hour and they would put you on the next flight. I'd pick a 2 hour layover. Houston POE was easy.

If you have frequent flier miles accumulated, then definitely use those for your one-way ticket.

If not, check out these travel sites I use below. Also as stated in a previous post, sometimes purchasing round-trip is cheaper than a one-way ticket.

Good luck!

Another tip: midweek is generally the cheapest time, so you might want to not go on Monday. Having said that, that may not be the case for next week (having just quickly looked at some flights). I guess the Easter holidays start mid- to late- next week so Monday may be a good call! Check out Tuesday though just in case.

I agree with the Kayak.co.uk recommendation. Always the cheapest place to find flights, and believe me, i spend HOURS hunting!

I would also suggest checking out cheap flights to hotspots like New York, Chicago, Raleigh/Durham can be very cheap, even LA (I once flew LON-LA then back on myself to Albuquerque because it was THAT much cheaper!) then check out Southwest Airlines to see if they have any deals going for internal flights.

If youre looking at saving even more pennies think about Amtrak or Greyhound once you hit American soil!

Also, let us know if you find something cheap because im still hunting and prices are crazy at them moment!

STA is definitely legit. I used to use it when I was younger as they're targeted towards college students and adults up to 26. Not sure if that has changed...

I heard recently that doing the search for flights on a tuesday night is the best time to even search for flights. Try it one week and let me know if it's true. And I agree that midweek flights are the best, tuesdays and wednesdays and search for the cheapest return option as it shouldnt make a differece when you schedule the return flight as its unlikely you will use it anyway.

NB: I actually scheduled my return for exactly 90 days after arrival just in case.
