Utah out of all places...

Utah Approves Guest Worker Program for Illegal Immigrants

Immigrants, Businesses Hail Bipartisan "Utah Solution," But Is It Constitutional?

March 7, 2011

Utah could become the first state in the nation with its own guest worker program that would grant permits to undocumented immigrants and allow them to continue living and working in the state legally.

The measure passed the Republican-controlled state legislature late Friday as part of a bipartisan deal that also includes an enforcement law, requiring police to check the immigration status of suspects in felony or serious misdemeanor cases.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert praised lawmakers for crafting a so-called "Utah solution" to the state's illegal immigration problem but has not said whether he will sign the bills.

The federal government would need to grant a waiver to allow Utah to permit immigrant workers who would otherwise not be legally present in the United States. Such a waiver would be unprecedented, and it's unclear whether a mechanism exists for the state to request one.

Most congressional Republicans and some Democrats currently oppose plans that would address the legal status of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living across the United States.

Supporters of the Utah bills say they strike the right balance for the economy, recognizing the importance of immigrant workers for businesses and the need to crack down on illegal immigrants involved in crime.

Still, passage of the legislation -- in a red state, in a part of the country most affected by illegal immigration -- is significant.

"This is a common sense, market-based approach that balances immigration enforcement with measures that are supportive of the needs of Utah businesses and are also welcoming of immigrants," said Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles.

Why don't we just throw all the laws out the window, open up our borders even more and let the illegals over run our country.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Utah needs a waiver from the Fed? Coolio !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Whether Arizona's SB-1080, California's pot bill, or now Utah's guest worker bill . . . all of these bills are designed to be overturned by the US Supreme Court based on the Supremacy Clause. Immigration and drugs remain a federal issue, and only the Feds can introduce any legislation here. Not even worth talking about.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Which begs the question, why bother with this bill? If you pass a bill that is designed to be overturned by SCOTUS, then why not pass a bill that is as incendiary as possible and gets you the most national attention (See: Arizona)?

This Utah bill is just going to piss off the national RWNs and give them more cause to be suspicious of Mormon conservatives in general. After all, you must be sufficiently hateful and bigoted to be a good RWN these days. Your heart isn't full of darkness? You're not welcome, go home ya freakin lib!

Like anyone in their right mind is going to trust a Mormon ? I would rather slit my throat with a straight razor then to have a Mormon in the White House.

FreeRepublic.com comments on this story. For those who don't know, that website is RWN-central.

Utah also left in place the outrageous in-state tuition program for illegal aliens, and is creating a special guest worker program with a state in Mexico! If you live or work in Utah, our condolences. You now live in the biggest sanctuary state in America. Look out.

Something about gutter and religion comes to mind. Who said that. Willard this #######. Will be hung around your neck.

Good!

We Arizonans will be happy to send Utah our illegal aliens.

We'll even open an express lane at the Lees Ferry for you.

Seriously, is this for real?

Hey Utah,

You all can have a bucket load of our Floriduh illegals.

When individual cities and/or states can make their own “national” laws this country no longer exists.

Does the Mormon faith believe in the tenet “the meek shall inherit the earth”?

Mormons are no longer the majority of the Salt Lake City population as of 2009, with an amnesty proposal such as this bill, they will lose majority status in the state in a generation.

If the commons is the tax base of the localities, counties and state of Utah, this bill will become the penultimate tragedy of the commons as the business interests who bought this legislation pass off their employee benefits costs onto the taxpayers social safety net while also whittling done the payscale across the bottom 80% of wage earners in the state.

Plainly put, it’s pure evil.

*****

The powers-that-be in Utah (the LDS church, the banks, the developers, and the utilities) are all behind the amnesty. It's a game of numbers and dollars for all involved. The church just plans on converting these poor lost souls...

Serious as a heart attack. The Mormon church is nothing more than a sneaking conniving cult who would do nothing more than to further their cult cause. You get a Mormon in there, and they are going to push the Mormon agenda. If I had my druthers, there would be no Mormon church, and all those Mormon Elders would be sitting in the joint doing their time. This post may not sound "politically correct" but it's a fact. Anyone that's not Mormon yet knows about them knows what I'm talking about. There's not that many Mormons in the east, but you come out west and it's like an infestation of ####### roaches. Especially the Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho states.

You're right, there aren't many out here. I've been in Jersey most of my life and I don't think I even know a Mormon or ever met one.

Nothing in your post really tells me what's wrong with them, though.

My younger brother and I played basket ball for two years with a "Mormon Ward" seeing how each "Ward" was allowed two non Mormons to play for them. It's a bloody cult is what it is. And when they think one of their own is "straying" so to say, they bring them in for an illegal brainwashing session. It's no joke. And as for hiring a non Mormon when one of them owns a business...lol. They keep it in the church. They remind me of some kind of twisted ant colony.

The Mormons were driven out of the east and fled west. They fled so far that they figured they would be left alone in the wilderness of the desert of Utah.

Unfortunately civilization eventually caught up with them. They have had to mend their ways to conform to modern America and are still existing.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
