When answering the questions, does it have to be verbatim, or as long as they 'get the idea', type answers?

No, it doesn't have to be verbatim.

Are you asking about the 100 civics questions?

They will also ask you questions on your N-400 applications.

I think the interview for N-400 is a bit different from the interview for your visa.

everything on the N-400, from your name to "if the law requires it, are you willing to perform work of national importance under civilian direction?"

I know some of them are yes or no questions, but you need to make sure what you answer is the same as what you marked on the form, assuming you didn't make any mistake while filling out the form.

Also study the 100 civic questions.

Do they read off your application like "blah blah blah" is this correct.

Or do they ask you the questions off your N400 like it was blank, without giving the answers you gave and get you to answer again?

Surely they expect you to remember all the dates you put down etc...or do they say them and you say correct?

based on my experience, for the "yes" "no" questions (actually most of the questions), the officer just read them off the form as they were and waited to see if what you answered matched what you put on the form and what the computer showed (your FBI background check). They will ask you to elaborate if they need more details on a specific question.

The questions that they ask when they go over the N-400 form are basically facts that should not change so your answers should be the same. They do read the questions directly off the application form. For the dates of your travel, they would probably ask if you've taken anymore trips since the application was sent in.

For the 100 civics questions, try to be as close to the answers provided in the book so that there is no room for interpretation.

It can be either way...it all depends on the IO.

Yesterday for my interview, he read my full name and asked me if that is my name, he read my employers names, and asked if I work there, he read my full address ...all i had to do was tell him if that was correct or not.

Go over the application that you sent ( hope you made a copy)

Have travel dates memorized.

As long as the facts are correct you can word it in any way..

As for the civics questions, it does not have to be verbatim and you dnt have to give all the answers if a particular question has 3 ways to answer.

Any one will do.

As long as the answer is correct you are fine.

As soon as you go n and the IO greets you and starts a conversation with you he gets a fairly good idea of your english conversation skills,

So the 6 questions can be answered as a single word answer provided it is correct..

For eg

What is the Supreme law of the land.

Ans - The constitution. No need to say The Sup. law of the land is the Const.

Why did the colonists fight the british?

Ans - High taxes

I did that and I passed.

On the N400

One good reason to fill out the N-400 yourself and even coming here to have some of those more nebulous questions explained. You do have to know why you answered those questions they way you did.

I did post a simplified test for my stepdaughter, with her brain she memorized it in about an hour and snapped back all six answers. Kind of reminded me of when I was drafted into military service for this country, had to memorize a whole bunch of meaningless regulations and names, like the entire chain of command from the president down. If you couldn't snap those answers back was told to get down and give your DI 50. 50 push ups that is. Would think it would be funny if your IO said the same thing to you if you missed a question. Get down and give me 50. It works! Ha, use that technique on my wife and stepdaughter, but never got my 50.
