I asked this in another forum and didn't get any feedback so I am posting it again and goes like:

Just got off the phone with a friend that is undergoing the process with Foreign Spouse and she asked me what exactly is it that USCIS/NVC and Consulates are looking for and how much information they really can find on a couple? I told her that they are looking for name checks and also check the USC to see if they are eligible to petition on behalf of the Foreign Spouse... I wasn't sure of what else to tell her BUT I have read a a lot here on VJ and whether or not it is all TRUE I am not sure. I once read that they can find anything about the two of you. I then thought to myself, why would they be looking for info that doesn't apply to the process. I have read that they read this website (VJ) and also Social Websites such as MySpace, Twitter, Facebook etc.

I told her that if you are who you say you are then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. If anyone has an insight and have more detailed info that I can tell her that would be great. I guess I have lead a guilt free life and boring as well and do not meant to toot my own horn BUT I have led a pretty straight forward and trouble free life! :)

They can find out pretty much anything, this is true. In addition to what you say, they can demand DNA tests, talk to current and past employers, neighbours and family (including exes), check various criminal and other databases, look at border crossing records etc etc. However, in most cases they do not- unless there are red flags to start off with.

There was a user years ago that said they hod gotten data from emails between her and her fiance and neither of them had given the information. They were denied at the time , partly because of using a k1 after a "wedding" in country ( documented in the emails )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

How could they get the emails and the read them? Seems fishy to me!

There have been cases on here where the CO (or it may have been an AOS from B2, I cannot remember) asked for the password to the email account so he could check the emails.
