You do not need your GC to apply for Social Security number, am surprised that you waited this long to apply. You are eligible to apply after 2weeks of your arrival in the United States paradventure it doesnt come automatically before then.Go to Social security website and use ur Zip code to search for SS office close to you.I arrived in the US on the 24th of January, applied for social security on the 2nd of february, SSN number arrived in the mail 5days later.I received my welcome notice Last friday and my 10years GC arrived yesterday, note; I arrived on IR1.So you may give it couple of days and if after 30days which will be on the 27th of this month and u havent heard anything then dont fail to call USCIS.Hope it helps, Welcome to the United States. There is nothing to be worried about cos it will come in no time. All the best.Simply go with your International passport and a filed copy of your Social security form to the SS office. It is good you fill it out before you get there for easy processing.Simply go to social security site to download and file out.

thanks a lot romnick for your very informative input, the reason why i waited this long, because i believed once you had applied ssn together with visa application during filling up DS230 form and ticked the box regarding applying for SSN and mostly CR1 got SSn card on their mail 2 -3weeks or even 7days after arrival in US. this informations helps a lot. Have a good day.

Exactly what I did and sure enough, my SSN card was in the mail 7 days after I arrived home.

My hubby entered the US near Christmas and I didn't receive the green card until February 14. The Welcome letter came the next day ironically enough. Now he went back to India to finish up things and isn't coming to live here until April so I am fedexing him his green card for his return. I was really hoping his social security card would arrive as we checked the box on the 230 form but looks like he will have to go in person to apply for that after all. Anyways...about 6 weeks..like clockwork you should get some correspondence..

Depending on the state I wouldn't rely on the Check-box on the 230. After receiving the welcome letter I took wife to SSA to apply for her number and got it a week later. For the green card the USCIS tracking of it on site is unreliable but you will get it. Wife got her Green card in the mail and 5 days later site was still showing processing. Only thing needed for SSA is birth certificate and passport with the entrance stamp, as the stamped visa is a temporary I-551 for a year until green card is mailed to you. It takes most if not more than the 30 days to receive the GC.

Within 2 hours of arrival in Fort Lauderdale, we were at the Social Security Field Office applying for a Social Security card. They said that USCIS had not yet sent our data to the Social Security system's computers and that it would take a few days. We returned to the Social Security Field Office on Thursday October 13 & again presented our completed application for a Social Security card. They said that as of the day before (Wednesday October 12) we had an application pending for a Social Security card (because we checked off box 33a on the NVC's DS-230 form). The field officer opened up that application and started working on it, typing in the information we provided on the completed application form we had just given her. After entering all that data, the field officer submitted our pending application to the system. The system responded that our application was now verified and approved. The field officer then gave us a form saying that the Social Security card would arrive in the mail within two weeks. We need the number ASAP, but the form that the field officer gave us says that they won't give the number out over the phone. So we plan to visit the Social Security Field Office again Monday, to ask them in person to just tell us what the number is!

We did check the DS-230 box, but simply checking the DS-230 box and waiting results in a rather long wait. Therefore we took steps to hasten the process along, as described here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/334804-how-to-quickly-get-your-ssn/ The physical Social Security card arrived in the mail yesterday, exactly 2 weeks after Port of Entry!
