How to Quickly Get Your SSN

CR-1 visa - Within 2 hours of arrival in Fort Lauderdale on Friday October 7th 2011, we were at the Social Security Field Office applying for a Social Security card. They said that USCIS had not yet sent our data to the Social Security system's computers and that it would take a few days. We returned to the Social Security Field Office on Thursday October 13 & again presented our completed application for a Social Security card. They said that as of the day before (Wednesday October 12) we had an application pending for a Social Security card (because we checked off box 33a on the NVC's DS-230 form). The field officer opened up that application and started working on it, typing in the information we provided on the completed application form we had just given her. After entering all that data, the field officer submitted our pending application to the system. The system responded that our application was now verified and approved. The field officer then gave us a form saying that the Social Security card would arrive in the mail within two weeks. We need the number ASAP, but the form that the field officer gave us says that they won't give the number out over the phone. So we visited the Social Security Field Office again on Tuesday October 18th, to ask them in person to just tell us what the number is! This succeeded - we were given another form with the Social Security Number printed on it. The field officer who gave us this second form also said that once the application is verified, the actual SSN is assigned within 24 hours. Therefore, we could actually have gotten the SSN on Friday October 14th - exactly ONE WEEK after arriving in USA. And if our first visit had been a day earlier, we would have gotten the SSN within SIX DAYS of arrival in USA!

So to recap, here is the timeline for getting your Social Security Card as quickly as possible!

1) Check box 33a on NVC's DS-230 form to send your info to the Social Security Administration.

2) Enter USA via your Port of Entry - this is day 0.

3) On day 5, visit your local Social Security Field Office to apply for your Social Security Card. Field officer will open your USCIS-filed application for a SSN, enter the data from your form, and submit your completed application. Your application will then become Completed and Verified. You will receive a form saying that your Social Security card will arrive in a few weeks.

4) On day 6, visit your local Social Security Field Office to ask them to give you your Social Security Number.

you have to wait 7-10 business days to apply for your SSN and you can get the number the next day but you gonna have to wait about a week to get the SSN card

My wife's SS card showed up 2 weeks after POE without doing anything. Seems like you went through a major hassle just to save a week.

Thanks for the advice. We are going to try this out; it has been about 6 weeks since entry and my wife's Social Security has not arrived as of yet. We did fill out the Part 2 of the DS 230 but nothing yet, so as to expedite the month that has passed we are going to go with this option.

If it's been 6 weeks, definitely get to the local SSA office asap and apply there. If you haven't gotten it in the mail now, you probably won't get it.
