You need to check with the specific airline you will be using. Some airlines allow 2 checked pieces (up to 50 lbs each) for international flights -without additional fees. Yet, this is not true for ALL airlines. Call your particular carrier or go to their website. Best wishes! (F)

Where did you read this?

The link for the Delta requirements said the first bag, up to 50 pounds is free, you can then check a second bag for a fee, this bag can ALSO be up to 50 pounds. For bags 3-10 there is a $200 per bag charge and each can be up to 50 pounds. Any of the checked bags over 50 and up to 70 pounds EACH will be subject to a $150 excess weight charge.

I saw the Delta site and saw the part where it says the first bag is free (within the weight that is), but cannot find where it says that the 2nd bag can weigh 50lb too.

On one of my earlier posts I mentioned a friend of mine's family moved to Australia and were allowed more weight.

Thanks

The way I read it is that you can have 1 or 2 bags upto 50lb or 23 kilos in TOTAL weight without paying any extra, and can pay extra upto I think 70lb.

If anyone can send a link to say where it says I can carry 2 cases each weighing 50lb's I would be very thankful

Dave :)

I have flown Delta from London to the US many times, and have taken 2 cases a lot of times (im incapable of packing light!)

It is generally much cheaper to pay for an extra bag, than to go over the weight limit.

Bag 1: Free

Bag 2: $50

Bags 3-10: $200 each.

"To avoid extra charges for oversize or overweight baggage, your checked bag must:

* Weigh 50 pounds (23 kg) or less.

* Not exceed 62 inches (157 cm) when you total length+width+height."

Each bag can weigh up to 50lbs. Again, I have done this myself, with both bags at exactly 50lbs (shoes weigh a lot...)

Overweight bags are charged at $150...

Good luck!

My last flight from LHR on Virgin Atlantic was -horrendous-. They've apparently instituted some policy that your carry on can only be 6 kilograms! (They then lost my bag, though thats a different story). In any case, you may want to check the carry-on policy of your flight provider too in order to make sure there isn't a weight limit on that.

Just to let folks know a lot has changed in the past year! While at one time almost standard for transatlantic flights, it is getting rarer and rarer to find an airline that will let you check two bags for free. Many airlines are moving to a per piece system with a maximum weight of 23kg/50lbs. As someone else pointed out, while many airlines have always had weight/size limits on carry ons, they seem to be checking and enforcing these limits much more frequently, with some even charging per carry on item (more the budget airlines).

If you research any shipping options you will find that $50 USD is a bargain for shipping 23kg/50lbs and you will have the items right away. Also, in my opinion airlines are more reliable at getting you your possessions than couriers/postal services.

Of course, as many have pointed out, not all airlines have the same policy and it is best to check with your individual airline before departure.

Thanks for all the replies.

I just wish I could have it in black and white about the luggage allowance of 2 bags. I knew the weight of the first bag.

Thanks for this NaC1, this is what I have been thinking, taking my clothes instead of sending them by courier. It would be cheaper and more reliable.

Thanks everyone

Dave :)

It's not just about the amount of weight, it's about the number of items too. I've flown international more times than I care to count (one year I flew 34 times).

Your first bag up to 50lbs is free for most transatlantic US carriers. Your second bag up to 50lbs is $50. Your third and beyond bag is $150. Add another 20lbs to any of those bags, you're incurring excess weight fees.

Bag 1 up to 50lbs = free

Bag 1 up to 70lbs = $150

Bag 1 and 2 up to 50lbs each = $50

Bag 1 and 2 weighing up to 50lbs and 70lbs = $200 or weighing up to 70lbs each = $350

Bag 1, 2 and 3 weighing up to 50lbs each = $250

They will not take bags that are 70lbs or heavier. Ever.

Definitely look into Parcel Monkey if you have more than 100lbs of items. It's incredibly cheap and easy to do, takes a couple days at most and your belongings are being transported by FedEx or DHL to the US.

ETA: It's obviously cheaper to take 150lbs of weight spread over 3 bags than it is to take 2 overweight bags...

Thanks a lot for this reply,

I think I will have enough with 2 cases. If not I will give the rest to charity. I am flying with Delta and I think the best bet is to phone them. I emailed them yesterday but have got an answer back yet!!!

Thanks
