We're all more than willing to pay cops and firefighters the big bucks. Why not teachers?

According to the national averages, you are correct. Cops average around $50,000 per year, teachers around $53,500 and firefighters only $40,000. Firefighters average way less because in rural areas companies are largely volunteer or part-time only. In metro areas, firefighters typically make more money than police since they're required to work longer hours. Police often moonlight as security guards for special events.

Regardless of that, whenever budget cuts are proposed, we'd rather cut teachers than cops or fire since they're seen as "necessary" to our safety.

They either work for CalFire, which is seasonal, for fairly large cities, or hold county fire full time paid positions. I wouldn't think volunteers would be included in average wage figures. Volunteer firefighters make good pay going out on CalFire or USFS fires, only because they get paid on a 24 hour cycle, not the hourly rate.

If you have MS-13 in your neighborhood, you should probably move - I doubt the cops are going to be much help.
