GOP gay-rights group brings Donald Trump to conservative gathering

Real estate mogul Donald Trump is set to make a last-minute appearance at CPAC on Thursday afternoon, a stop orchestrated with the help of GOProud, the conservative-leaning gay-rights group that's the focus of a boycott from several leading conservative organizations.

News of Trump's 3 p.m. speech has been spreading among attendees throughout the morning, with the help of GOProud's Chairman Chris Barron and other supporters of the group in attendance.

Trump, who's flirting with a presidential bid in 2012, will also meet with the group Thursday afternoon.

Barron told The Ballot Box it makes sense to "bring somebody like Trump to CPAC," noting that he has a huge megaphone and the ability to "talk about the fiscal conservative issues that are really motivating and driving this country right now."

Barron is handing out literature urging attendees to vote for Trump in the CPAC straw poll.

Barron said the reception from CPAC attendees has been "terrific" so far and that he expects Trump's appearance to further bridge the divide that GOProud's presence has created among some social conservatives.

"The boycotters are actively looking to undermine CPAC," he said. "We're working to bring new voices to the table. What I'm telling people: Liberals boycott. Conservatives debate."

Rule no. 1 when you are running for office (or thinking about it)...

Don't alienate the very people who might have otherwise supported you.

How do you come into Cpac and go after Ron Paul of all people?

Even if his point is valid.... why use your time to bring it up?

:secret: Ron Paul bought his way in CPAC in 2007, and again this time around. If Trump wants to get anywhere, he has to either knock off Ron Paul, or Mitt Romney. Without CPAC, there would be no Ron Paul.

I'd like to see Ron Paul get the nomination, eventhough I know there's not a snowballs chance in hell of that ever happening.

Sure as hell beats putting up Palin, Huckabee, etc.. though.

It's still the biggest joke that McCain got the nomination in '08.

Don't worry people, Ron Paul will not get the nomination so stop being scared. Even the national and state GOP keeps fund a rival richly during the primary to unseat him. We go ahead and vote for the guy anyway by a huge percentage but they keep trying. Usually the Socialists don't even try as they know it is a lost cause and a waste of money. They tried once and it was embarrassing.

I do love how people slobber all over Palin or a Trump. It is why we are doomed.

Paul might as well be dead, his schtick is that stale

Ron Paul is the only person in US Congress who is serious about addressing the

deficit/debt problem we're facing.

Everybody else thinks it's a joke.

$1.5 TRILLION deficit *this year alone* and they are still talking about

trimming $70 million here and $230 million there.

My only laughter about them trying to get the deficit under control is they are trying to so hard to cut 100 billion out. We are projected to have a trillion and a half deficit.........

Debt added per day: $4 billion

Think about that.
