Update on Michael and Mae. They got their house back. They are moving to Virginia in a couple of weeks, he is going back active military so he can retire from the military. We live in the same city, I met Michael and his wife at a Thanksgiving party, and we have became fast friends.

We spent Christmas at their house, and they spent New Years Eves at ours, they are good people and I will miss them..........

that is complete bullshit, agree with Maxx on this one :S

**Edit - if it WAS true, that man needs to divorce that woman. What an idiot. He's off fighting a war and you let people take the house because you think you're above paying bills? Why would you assume you wouldn't have bills all those months? How would you not fight tooth and nail the day someone tries to kick you out? Why wouldn't you have someone "fixing it" before it got that bad? no way they would foreclose without seeing you. No way, especially if you're living there. Wow, what bull!

I'm the wife of an American Soldier;

I'm the hope that lives within him after storm clouded days.

The freedom from war that gives wings to his heart,

May they reach across the miles and bind our hearts together

against all that we must face in this world.

Someone has to train Mae about daily living in the US. Her husband or a friend should guide her how to survive the US life. If Mae would continue with her present attitude, she is more of a burden to her husband.

She was alone and taking care of her family in a $300,000 home her parents had given her as a gift.

"When Michael went to Iraq, I went into a very bad depression," she said.

The mail piled up unopened and Mrs. Clauer missed $800 in payments to her HOA. Then she missed the letters saying the association planned to foreclose.

"I ignored a lot of our bills," she said.

Even after the HOA foreclosed and sold the home at auction, Mrs. Clauer didn't open the letters that said she had six months to get the home back, and that time lapsed, too.

I don't know how long she went without paying bills and ignoring second chances in all, but it looks like it was on the order of a year. The fact this detail is missing from the article shows how slanted it is. Just wanting the home owner's association look bad without fully acknowledging the lack of responsibility by the girl.

It could easily have been worded "deadbeat wife doesn't pay bills for over a year, loses Daddy's 300K gift house. But the author is instead trying to play up "freedom fighter has home taken by evil scrooge" angle to sell copy.

People that don't have to work for things behave less responsibly. All this shame on the neighbors and home association for not pandering to the princess and her free house. Thank goodness she has her free house back now. I hope she has some servants to open the mail for her now so it doesn't happen again.

Depression is a real illness that has to be treated. But this free house situation has another lesson that the writer clearly ignored to try making it into a tear-jerker.

yeah i went into a bit of a depression spell a few years back...but my bills still got paid and my mails were still opened and looked at. the wife needs to suck it up and step up to take care of things while husband is away.

Thats about one years dues probably less, and since dues would still accumulate leading up to the forclosure, they started the process before a year was up.

understand that this aint no big city and if im wrong correct me, but the board of the HOA would be made up of their neighbors. The guy who actually does the dirty work may not be, but i mean come on, none of them knew he was in iraq?

and you cant say the wife was an idiot as im sure all the other bills were paid.

when i was in the military i had all my bills debited from my account. maybe they did the same for most of their bills, i know i wasnt the only soldier who did it. there was this guy who had a huge lot that would charge us like a 100 bucks to park our cars their for months, we still kept insurance cause in colorado you get hit by huge chunks of hail, i know ever guy there prolly had autopayed insurance.

so its really not a hard thing to see if she just thought it was junk letter from them.

@ Vanessa&Tony

heheh na im sure we would agree on alot :) i just like to be difficult :)

While I hate HOA's just as the next guy, she is 85% or more to blame in this situation. You can't just stick your head in the sand and ignore real life.

The guy should have asked a sibling or parents to keep tabs on the bills if he knew she was irresposible.

I'd have second thoughts about spending the rest of my life with someone like that...
