Whole process divided in 3 stage

1) USCIS Stage: u need to file your petition here. USCIS will approved your petition and approval it will forward the case next step ( NVC Stage) for further processing. ur petition is in USCIS stage now. According to current USCIS processing time of Calfornia service center, u need about 5 months in this stage ( If all ur submitted papers are ok and they don't need more docs)

2) NVC Stage: After the approval of petition, USCIS will forward your case to NVC. In this stage, NVC will collect fees like Affidavit of Support ( AOS) fee and Immigration Visa (IV) fee from you, and also will collect documents from u step by step. They will collect from u (a) completed I-864 & Supporting docs for I-864, (b)DS-3032 ( Choice of Agent, from Beneficiary) and © Completed DS-230 form & Supporting civic docs. After collecting all fees and docs , they all process your case step by step . NVC steps can be divided as follows according to their appearance-

i) Generate case no for your petition ( Different from USCIS file no)

ii) Generate AOS Fee Invoice, Collect AOS Fee, and Waiting for completed DS-3032 ( Choice of Agent)

iii) Generate IV fee invoice after receiving DS-3032 & Collect IV fee

iv) Waiting for I-864 and required docs after payment is paid of AOS fee

v) Waiting for completed DS-230 anf civic docs after payment is paid of IV fee

vi)Complete your Case after receiving all fees, forms and docs according to their requirements

vii) Schedule Interview when your Priority Date(PD). [will be Current. Your PD is Dec 2010, becoz u have filed your petition that time]

viii) Forwarded your files to Local US Embassy for visa interview after assigning Interview Date.

As per visa bulletin, NVC is Scheduling Interview for the cases of PD Jan2008. So u are behind about 3 years, but no body knows how long u need to wait here to be current. It is may be 6 months to 3 years or more than 3 years. so It is better to prepare your mind to wait about 3 years in this stage. And NVC will start processing of step (ii) about 9 months before your PD become current.

Suggestion for NVC Stage : - as soon as your case will be forwarded to NVC, call them and give them your email address ( it will make your communication faster with NVC). - After you u become citizen send your Naturalization Certificate to NVC and request them to update your case category from F2a to IR-1. In IR-1 category, u don't have any waiting time for visa number and interview schedule.

2)US Embassy Stage: Require to do Medical and appear in Interview according to their instruction.

Wishes Good luck for all who are waiting for their love ones to unite.

plz check the following link, u will get more helpful infos:

You're asking how long is the process to become a US Citizen..? IF yes then it would be 6 months (national average). IF you're asking with the case you submitted it is expected to take 3 years.. the processing times could decrease as the visa bulletin change from month to month
.

does retrogression gonna affect processing time for california service center?
NO it does not affect any of the service centers however does affect every F2A categorized applicants once the cases are transferred to the NVC (then it sits).

You filed in December 2010.. I did too for the same category.. so you can follow the process and updates, and approvals. See the link below an add your case date etc.

My husband was student in ireland before we got married since nov 2006. he came backhome country to get married in nov 2010. he still had student visa for ireland but he was there backhome for a while when i filed petion for him.

now after living backhome for abt 2 months he is going back to ireland bec his visa was still valid.

how i can change his current address on the immigrantion forms becuase he will be in ireland now not in backhome.

he is only on student visa in ireland not a citizen or permanent resident.

i dont know what should i do to update his current address in immigration.

bec i dont wana end up having his interview in backhome and he is in ireland.

plz tell me how it will work.

USCIS will not contact with your husband now. They will contact with u only. And it is wise to use home country address. I have read somewhere that u need to face interview in your home country's Embassy or country where u are permanent residency( but not fully sure) . When ur case will be transferred to NVC after approval from USCIS, NVC will send u letter and give u chance to update your spouse address. So my idea is, not to change address now in USCIS, let them approve it first and when NVC will contact u further processing, u can change spouse address that time. But before changing address, make sure that they will allow ur husband to take interview in Ireland. U can call NVC and ask them to make sure after ur case transferred to NVC.
