It's not unreasonable for a non Muslim to believe that after a forced conversion that he/she is now a bona fide Muslim. However, don't you think that if you were forced to convert to a religion and now believe you are a member of this religion you would at least pick up a book and read about your new found religion? Sorry that was a run on. Anyways....after reading this book about Islam the forced revert would discover that he in fact is not stuck with this religion. It's really common sense. If someone stuck a gun to my head and told me to convert to let's say..Judaism..I would have the common sense to know that I wasn't sincere in my conversion. Therefore after my release I would just go back to being Muslim again. I wouldn't even have to go as far as reading about Judaism. It's common sense...seriously. God knows what's in our hearts and minds.

Right. The two reporters didn't say anything to indicate that they would now live as Muslims. They simply said they were forced to convert. That is what they were led to believe... that they converted at gunpoint. And that is what the media is reporting.

That the conversion means nothing is clear to everyone. That is not the news here. The news here is that two reporters were forced to do something that they believed comprised a conversion to Islam.

Yes. If this did indeed happen then the ppl who did the forcing are not true Muslims and they know it. Not all ppl who call themselves Muslims are in fact Muslim. Just like not all ppl who call themselves Christians or what have you act like Christians or whatever. We can't paint everyone with the same brush.

But to them, it does not matter what you think they are or are not. If they consider themselves to be muslim, christian, jew... then in their minds they are.. and declare as much with what actions they take. According to "The Koran For Dummies" there's a hadith where a Jew was brought before the caliph. His accusers wanted him put to death for apostasy because he converted to Islam but they caught him practicing Judaism. The Jew testified that the men, along with others, refused to do business with him because he was Jewish, and they threatened him as well. So he "converted" to save his business and his livelihood. The caliph asked the accusers if it was true, they admitted they may have been poor customers because he was Jewish and let him know that. The caliph released the Jew, told him to practice his religion as he saw fit, and to come back if he found his business suffering needlessly. Then he turned to the accusers and told them if they "helped" anyone else convert to Islam in this manner they would be the ones facing punishment. He further ordered them to be good customers of the Jew, and if they weren't they'd similarly be in trouble.

So according to you, Henia, these men are Muslim because they testifed that there is only one God and Mohammed is his prophet. If they renounce that testimony, do you believe they are apostates?

What we need is a fatwa stating that the only time muslims may resort to violence in defense of Islam is when the very existence of Islam requires such extreme measures. From what I understand, the parts of the Koran that talk about war and violence occur during the war fought against Mohammed and the infant muslim nation. At that time Islam was new and had few adherents, so if they had lost that war Islam would have been destroyed. The problem is terrorist groups use those quotes out of context to justify their criminal acts.

So Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al Fatah etc. cannot resort to violence to fight the Israellis on religious grounds, if such a fatwa were to be pronounced. For example.
