My fiance has an interview with Montreal Conslate on January 21st, and I am not sure to whether or not I can be there. I haven't received my days off work yet. How important is it for me to attend at the interview? Especially for people, whose first language is not English, has anyone of you atttended the interview without your USC fiance? Please share your experience.

Does someone think that the beneficiary is treated differently if the USC Fiance attends the interview than not?

I think Canada is one of those consulates where it really doesn't matter if the US fiance is present or not. Their presence would be as moral support for the beneficiary, but as they don't get to sit in on the interview (generally) and Canada is not considered a high fraud country, if the US citizen partner can make it, well and good, but if they can't, it isn't a problem.

My then fiance wasn't able to get time off of work to attend the interview with me. The interviewer never even asked if he was there or not.

Is your fiance French Canadian or does he speak a different language than French?

In some countries where fraud is higher, it really helps to have the USC there. In Canada, it's not really a big deal. I highly doubt the USC not being there makes any difference. If it would help your fiance feel more comfortable speaking English, I'd say you should go just to ease his/her mind and make it less nerve-wracking. But as far as importance, no, it isn't really important that you attend.

I would agree that it certainly isn't required. Many people go without their SO's without a problem. I will say however, that having my husband at our interview made me feel 100% more confident and less nervous.

Nope. I went alone. Interview is the easist part of the whole process, most of the time is spent waiting, bring a book.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Have to agree with the above people. Most the people I saw the day of my interview were alone, Such as birdnerd, haga and another lady. My husband thought that a 18 hour drive round trip to the interview was too much when he was coming to get me 12 days later, not to mention he had just started a new job and was unsure whether he could get it off.

I was not asked anything to do with him being there or not. Just the regular questions, Montreal seems to have great staff :)

When I went through Vancouver in 2009, my petitioner not being there wasn't a problem at all. Wasn't even mentioned.

The border officer at the PoE a few months later, on the other hand...

The first question out of his mouth was a very pointed query about why my fiancee wasn't with me. Go figure. :)

Him: Where's your fiancee ?!

Me: <quizically> Uhhh.... She's in Salt Lake City?

Him: <snapping> Well what's that mean to me ?!

Me: <slightly stunned silence>

I think it's one of those mid trick thingies where they throw you off balance right away to keep you docile and honest through the proceeding. Wasn't fun. First thing I did after getting through there was pull into the first tow to fill up on cheap American gas and call my fiancee. First words to her over the phone were "I'm in."
