And do the guests ever expect the host of the party to pay their way?

Depends. I know of people who will get a bunch of suites at the Taj on their own dime and let their guests crash in them. But that isn't the norm.

Understand though, that rules are different when it comes to kids. Asking kids to pay their own way is kinda low.

Indoctrinate them early with learning to expect a 'free ride'. Libruls.

No worries, once they're in college the spell will break when they're invited to their first "meet me at a bar" birthday party where they're expected to buy the host a drink.

I don't mean any offense here.

In my opinion and experience with my son's birthday partys and ones he's been invited to ( both home and venue) there was not a requirement to pay.

What if the kid's parents cannot afford the price of admission you invited their kid to? then you have your kid upset that kid didn't come when invited and an embarrassed upset kid at the other end.

I picked ( inexpensive) venue parties that we could afford to pay 100% for, then all the invitees could come. It was tempting to do the zoo or the fun house parties, but I could not bring myself to ask for party contributions from folks that were given an unsolicited invite to.

Ryan was at Summer Camp for one of his birthdays ( awwwwwwwww)...anyway I had a truckload of pizza delivered....tons of junk food/drink and pinatas there-the kids had a BLAST!

edit-I will say that when we got a bouncy castle rented---I did make them ( the parents) sign a release....

That party was nerve wracking and never ever again!

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I think you need to bring in a petting zoo, rent a bounce house, get a magician, a few clowns, etc :)

I don't have kids but I'm in a family with lots of little kids running around and I've never heard of a party where you ask others to pay. Usually you pay for everything if you're throwing the party (any kind of party). I think it's tacky to ask people to come to a party for your kid and then ask them to pay for their kid to be there.

Highly tacky. +1, Amby.

I can't imagine a parent making such a request. Either host and pay for the party 100% or just forget about it.
