Today is the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. He was many things to many people: a musician, an activist, a father and much more. The world is indeed a much sadder place without him among to remind us of our humanity. Perhaps it's fitting that a man of peace died in such a violent way, it somehow seems appropriate that such a beautiful spirit was taken from ugliness of our quotidian existence, even if it doesn't make our spirits feel any less bitter at our loss.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

I worked for a short time in the emergency room reception area at Roosevelt Hospital,

where John was taken that night (was actually before that fateful day).

The realization of what he meant in my life only came to a head with that event as it did for many.

Such a waste of a truly great talent to have to end like that. He was happy in his marriage &

a very hands-on dad and was getting back into making music after the "lost weekend" in

The Christmas song will be with us forever and although seasonal is a personal favorite.

It brings back the memory of his tragedy even closer as he died at the beginning of that season.

I heard it this week when I picked up my wife at her trendy ladies' clothing store.

Most of the customers there were born after John was shot.

Still, the song would not out of place if played in a stuffy, upper East Side NYC restaurant.

That's the sign of a true musical masterpiece.

It's so hard to believe that it has been thirty years, I guess I'm getting old. A magical talent cut down in his prime by some nut. The world lost a piece of musical history. His work lives forever.

(F) I was in high school. I remember getting up to get ready for school, and my Dad turned on the radio to listen to the news. It was stunning to realize that such a positive person would be targeted and killed. It still is.

Yeah, for us, it was the morning news program on TV. What I never understood is how it only took one shot to the back when there are so many who survive multiple gunshot wounds. I guess Mark David Chapman just got luck with that single, fateful bullet.
