Hi - We sent our paper work in last week and received an email with the a case number which when we looked on the USCIS website gave this status ... :

INITIAL REVIEW - "On December 3, 2010, we received this I129F PETITION FOR FIANCE(E), and mailed you a notice describing how we will process your case. Please follow any instructions on this notice...."

Question ... does this mean we reached NOA1 on December 3 ? If so, it seems very fast!

NOA1 is a receipt notice.

NOA means "notice of action". It is the I-797 form which is mailed for ALL communications with the USCIS. There is, in fact, no such thing as "NOA1" That is a Visa Journey term. Say it to USCIS and they will have no idea what you are talking about.

Whenever you send ANY application or petition requiring a FEE you will receive a "receipt" for your payment and a description of what you paid for. This is a type of notice of action, or "NOA". The first NOA you receive is usually the receipt for your petition and payment, as it was in your case. It is usually dated the same day as when they received the petition, though it may be a few days before they send it. You will have an NOA1 for the petition, for the Adjustment of Status (AOS) for the removal of conditions (RoC) and for the citizenship filing. Heck, with 3 people in our family I have a drawer FULL of the damn things! PLUS approvals, biometrics, welcome letters and all the rest. Collect them all (hopefully)

The "NOA2" is usually the "approval". It can be an RFE or some other communication which is a notice of action. Again, there is officially no such thing as "NOA2" and the term has only a made up meaning here on VJ. What your goal to acheive is the APPROVAL. With any luck it will be received with the SECOND notice of action.

Good luck
