Hi,

We're getting ready for our interview next month and I'm getting a little nervous about the possibility of getting denied.

For the most part everything is in order.

I make enough money and am permanently employed

We have proof of relationship (chats, phone records, pictures etc)

No criminal backgrounds for either of us

No drug use

Neither of us have ever been married

No overstays

The thing I'm worried about is my fiance (the beneficiary) attempted suicide 3 years ago (1 year before we met). He went through group therapy and was under a Dr's supervision. He never had to take medication for it and has completely turned around his life.

He had his medical last month and answered truthfully about his suicide attempt. He brought a letter from his Dr outlining his treatment, his outlook and that essentially it was an isolated incident. The Panel Physician didn't seem to be too concerned about it and spent more time going over his vaccinations.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect at the interview? I'm sure they will ask but is it an automatic reason for denial? Is it automatic grounds for a psych eval or is it at their discretion?

Any help or experience you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know much about it but from what I have read from other's experiences the medical people make the recommendation. If the medical people see a problem they would have probably asked for additional information or sent him for additional evaluation. I would not think that it should be a problem.

Hi,

The panel physician makes the decision according to the government website. What if the applicant has a history of harmful or violent behavior?

Applicants with any history of harmful or violent behavior resulting in injury to people or animals, or harm to inanimate objects must provide information that will allow the panel physician to determine if the behavior was related to a psychiatric or medical problem, or to drug or alcohol use. Harmful behavior includes attempted suicide or self-harm, no matter how minor in nature.

If the panel physician had the information and gave him an okay then he obviously felt that medically he is fine. Having letters from his physician was a good thing.

All the best!

Thanks everyone. That makes me feel a little better, now I just have to figure out if the panel physician passed him or not. He has the results but naturally you can't open them.

All Good.

The Panel Physician didn't seem to be too concerned about it and spent more time going over his vaccinations.

It's the Panel Physician's decision on whether to issue the medical documents in the sealed envelopes and make a decison for futher analysis or not. If they have released them to be medically fit, then the interview has no authority to question their decision.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect at the interview? I'm sure they will ask but is it an automatic reason for denial? Is it automatic grounds for a psych eval or is it at their discretion?

No automatic anything except most likely Approved.

Any help or experience you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about it either. The interview is really easy. We were asked simple questions like "when did you meet? what is your job?" - basic stuff. My impression was that the interview was more of a formality. I think they're just making sure everything is in order, not looking for a reason to deny you.

OP, in my opinion, your fiance's lifestyle can also say volumes about his mental state. ie: if he is able to hold down a job or finish university and even continue a long distance relationship, I think that it tells doctors he is doing a lot better than he was several years ago. Unstable people do not hold down relationships, period, let alone long distance, between 2 countries.

From the sounds of things, your fiance got the help he needed and is not likely to be a risk to himself again in the future, and I'm sure the doctor recognized that :)

I bet you will be back here in no time posting about your approval :)
