Hi,

Am looking for US visa advice and i got this site from one of my friend who is in US. I want to go to US and start working there and then go for further education. I have no idea about how to apply for VISA and what are the different types of VISAS they have.

I need your advice to guide me to the right path and let me know from where i should start. What all i need to do. I don't have any relatives there. I have a close friend who is an American. She doesn't have much knowledge about visa process.

I want to know which would be the best step which will help me to move to US.

Regards,

Deena.

Well, first thing - what do you want to do? Work or study? You can really only do both legally if you have a green card (someone correct me if I am wrong).

A student visa will require you to meet a certain financial requirement set by the university/college and be academically accepted into a program before you can apply

A work visa will require company sponsorship - meaning you will have to have a job offer and a company willing to complete the visa process for you

Good luck

Study first, hopefully that will set you up with a company willing to sponsor you for a work visa.

I would not assume that you would be able to find part time work on campus. Just think of it as a top up if you do.

Fi student visa is your best option, as someone pointed out above. i dont know what your situation is, but if I were you, I would try to get an education in India (where there are many fine schools); probably IT since that's the current boom. then work for an MNC and see if you can transition into a consulting position which offers overseas posting. that would give you an h1b to allow you to come to the US and work here, or elsewhere in europe or so. the hassle of getting a visa is ridiculous, quite frustrating and very time consuming. you could just do the same things in India and find an easier way here via an H1b (although there are caps on that too and will likely continue to be there). as someone who's spent quite a bit of time in India over the last year and has very close ties to it, I would move to India in a heartbeat and not bother coming here - prosperity is abound there. i'm not discouraging you at all, since the US is pretty great, but w/o having family here to sponsor you (anything other than a USC family member sponsoring on a 1st degree basis ie, parent-child, or spouse-spouse, makes it very difficult and time-consuming; your wait time could well amount to at least 5 yrs), makes it difficult. your other option is also of course to directly apply for a job here and try to get an h1b from a US company, but the chances of that are also practically none, since preference would be for USCs (given the recent wave of protectionist policies; somewhat justifiable IMO).

anyway, best of luck to you. study well in India and then find a great MNC to work for and try to get overseas posting - that would be my 2 cents (or 2 paise).
