My plan is to get the N-400 in the mail as soon as the Tax Transcripts arrive. I've collected all the paperwork and crossed the t's and dotted the i's. My wife informed me that her brother is getting married next year and he will know the date in late November. I would love to get this over with but now I'm afraid we might be in Thailand for a wedding when they schedule the interview or oath ceremony. I see the current form expires on 1/31/11 so it will mean doing the n-400 again if I wait. Should I also be concerned that we have the interview and oath ceremony but then will need to wait for a U.S. passport before she can leave the U.S.? I'm a gambler by nature but just feeling like I'll lose this one if I start it now.

Does your BIL know which season he will marry? If it's not until the summer then I would file the N-400 now. And even if it's the Spring the chances are that you'll have completed the process by then. US passports barely take any time to obtain, so don't add that worry. :)

Each to his own on this subject, set your own priories and don't be asking for advice. Wife's niece she was very close to announced she was getting hitched during our processing time. It was far more important for us to get my wife settled in this country than to postpone it for a wedding.

At weddings, many strangers, loud band, and can barely say hi to the bride or groom, up in cloud nine with a thousand things to do. We did visit them after their wedding, took them to a quiet restaurant and had a very enjoyable evening, even gave them a nice wedding present they loved. US cash. All worked out fine in the end.

If that wedding is more important to you than getting settled in this country, just go.

I agree with Nick... your BIL will do fine without you being there and you can catch up after. The process of becoming a USC will determine your future when you want to stay in this country. Do this ASAP since you never know what the future will bring. Laws can change and it might become a lot more difficult or expensive (which it already is BTW). Don't take that risk.

I don't understand why it's an issue? Either way you would be able to go to the wedding - or is it about money? If the oath is scheduled while you're gone make sure a family or friend is getting your mail and send back the letter to postpone (we had to do this 3x's while my husband was out of the country this summer). The interview can also be rescheduled for this reason. To get a US passport you can expedite if needed. Some have same day and some next day. We expedited my son's passport applying on a Wednesday and had it via Priority mail Friday.

I've looked at all the wait times and it seems to be about 4 months. Money is not the issue but I know that it IS important to my wife to be there for her brothers wedding. I also know they would like my daughter to be in the wedding. I think we are going to take our chances. The issue is I want her memories of U.S. Citizenship to be a happy moment and not one she associates with missing her only brothers wedding.

At least you were able to make a decision, good show. None of my wife's relatives or friend could attend out wedding, but our fault because my wife wanted to get married in the USA. Next to impossible for her friends and relatives to even get a visa to come here where we are free to go down there.

I am not hard to get along with, just met a woman I actually wanted to marry, didn't care where.
