Turkey and Iran have dispatched tanks, artillery and thousands of troops to their frontiers with Iraq during the past few weeks in what appears to be a coordinated effort to disrupt the activities of Kurdish rebel bases.

Scores of Kurds have fled their homes in the northern frontier region after four days of shelling by the Iranian army. Local officials said Turkey had also fired a number of shells into Iraqi territory.

The Turks and Kurds have a very rocky history. Any attempt to create a separate Kurdish state would likely be vehemently opposed.

Havent the kurds been raiding into Turkey and Iran specifically for that purpose? Read an article a while back bout this (looking for link.. but so far no luck)

I would have to do a bit of reading up on it as well - I thought back when the war started, the US was trying to organise the Kurds to seize Iraqi assets in the north of the country, around the city of Kirkuk - where a lot of the countries oil fields are located.

Seem to remember reading that the Turks either did, or were on the verge of sending troops into Northern Iraq to stop them.
