Hey everyone

a Friend of mine told me I would need to translate Birth certificate and police records before I leave the country (because translations are way more expensive in the US than here in Venezuela) because I would need that for the AOS process, but I have been checking the guides and I dont think they mention anything about police records or maybe I missed it?.. I´d like to be sure if I will need it so I can ask someone certified by the embassy to translate them both and also in case I need an original of it.. thanks

I just got my interview letter and there was a supplemental document that (I cannot remember the exact wordage!) basically said this:

- if you've ever been arrested, bring an official document to show that you were not charged

- if you've ever been charged, bring an official document to show what happened in court (or however the matter is resolved in your home country)

- if you're been either of the above but the incident has been purged from your record, bring a document that says it's been purged form your record!

And they want it all in English... Hope this helps!

You can download the AOS instruction sheet separate from the AOS form I-485: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-485instr.pdf

in the instructions, it says police records of the fiance(e) are required for the AOS only in special circumstances; there are supplmental forms you have to read (also found on the USCIS website) to see if they even apply to your case...you may want to direct your question to or do some research on the Regional Discussion board to see what information you can find about obtaining a police clearance there, or if it is even applicable.

Hope this helps.

The I797C for the interview also has a line item:

"If you have ever been arrested, bring the related Police Report and the original or certified Final Court Disposition for each arrest, even if the charges have been dismissed or expunged. If no court records are available, bring a letter from the court with jurisdiction indicating this."

This is a pro forma and can confirm that I received mine with these words on it, my wife (when she was immigrating in 2002) received them and her brother also received them.

Between replying the first time and now I IM'd a colleague who actually received an RFE for lack of documentation related to a prior drug-related arrest. He indicated on the I485 that he had been arrested and put an annotation on his form that it was drug-related. They wanted to see paperwork at the application stage, pre-interview......

Hey my friend!!

I haven't read that you need it anywhere, you do need your original birth certificate + English translation!

Maybe if you have a criminal record which I don't think you have!
