Rescue efforts underway after oil rig explosion in Gulf

An oil rig has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are underway for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the rig total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

This is a long existing fixed production platform on the continental shelf rather than a deep water drilling rig. These production platforms have existing producing wells that have Sub-Surface Safety Valves (SSSV's) installed below the ocean floor in addition Surface Safety Valves (SSV's) installed on the tree. There are numerous Shut Down Valves (SDV's) installed on the processing unit that also contain any flow to the fire. All automatically shut when such disasters occur to stop flow to the fire which will eventually burn out. There is no comparison to the BP disaster which was an uncontrolled well blowout.

This must clearly be Obama's attempt to disenfranchise southern republican voters to keep them away from the polls this november. Obama the socialist will undoubtedly keep up the tragedies in the south to further this agenda and ensure his re-election.

I just thought I'd throw that out there before Danno gets to it. Save us all some time and trouble.

And I thought it was just a random industrial accident.

Thanks, peejay good.gif This answered the questions I have had about this incident, the talking heads on TV aren't giving any useful info like this.
