Anyone still assume people in caves are a bigger threat to America, than this going on next door?

Doing nothing is equivalent of allowing your neighbor to assault and torture their family; while you turn a blind eye.

Mexican mayor killed near migrant massacre site

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico — Suspected drug hitmen killed the mayor of a small town in northern Mexico on Sunday in a region where two car bombs exploded last week and the bodies of 72 murdered migrant workers were found.

Gunmen in SUVs shot and killed Mayor Marco Antonio Leal as he drove through his rural municipality of Hidalgo near the Gulf of Mexico in Tamaulipas state, the local attorney general's office said. Leal's 4-year-old daughter was slightly wounded in the attack, a spokesman said.

Some cartels have been known to carry out targeted shootings that kill the intended victim, but not children riding in the same vehicle. Leal's daughter was reportedly shot in the leg.

It was not immediately clear why Leal was targeted. But Tamaulipas has become one of Mexico's bloodiest flashpoints since the start of the year as rival hitmen from the Gulf cartel and its former armed wing, the Zetas, fight over smuggling routes into the United States.

Leal Garcia's rural town, Hidalgo, has about 25,000 inhabitants. It lies southwest of a part of Tamaulipas where a massacre survivor said Zetas gunmen killed 72 Central and South American migrants last week.

Hidalgo is also near the border with Nuevo Leon state, where the mayor of another town, Santiago, was found murdered on Aug. 18. Local police allied with a drug gang are suspected in that killing.

"This cowardly crime, and the reprehensible violent acts that occurred recently in this state, strengthen the commitment of the Mexican government to continue fighting the criminal gangs that seek to intimidate the families of Tamaulipas," President Felipe Calderon's office said in a statement.

And these organized crime syndicates are just going to start playing nice and give up right. I guess for some, putting your head in the sand and hoping it all goes away works.

Maybe we should legalize murder, since that doesn't seem to be getting any better either. Pedophilia and rape too while we are at it.

How about assisting Mexico and going after the scumbags that did this? Using those UAV's to bomb the ####### out of these billion dollar crime syndicates. How about confiscating the money and assets of all of these crime syndicates? Not exactly easy to hide billions of dollars now is it.

Yet no action will be taken to prevent the abuse and exploitation of people. we will argue whether police in Arizona can check someone's ID, but do nothing to the employers that abuse and exploit people to line their own pockets.

Hammer the employers with ruinous taxes for employing illegal workers and 90% of the problem vanishes. Democrats know it will work, Republicans know it will work...that is why no one will do it. Both parties are just fine with exploiting humans for their own purposes and they do not care that 70 or 100 or 2000 get killed in the process. What is a Mexican mayor's life worth vs. a US politicians career?

How about HAMMERING the employers of illegal aliens so we end the flood of aliens coming for economic reasons. makes it a lot harder fopr the drug dealers to belnd in or use the people coming here to be employed as "mules". Thin out the flood across the border and it makes it easier to catch any given smuggler. They just use the lettuce pickers and grass cutters as "cover".

I agree with legalizing some drugs and decriminalizing others. It is not the same as legalizing murder. The use of marijuana by one person does not kill another person like murder does. Bombing people in Mexico is going to require one of two things...

1. Declare war on Mexico and make a military incursion. We did it in 1916. Obama was not the President then.

2. Be asked by the Mexicvan politicians to do so, but they are paid for by drug money, so I will not hold my breath

I think people in Mexico are crying out for assistance, well they cannot do so publicly, without being slaughtered. Even the reporters stopped covering stuff like this, so they are not targets.

Funny how Hollywood will make movies like blood diamonds to show poorly people are treated in the name of a diamond but will not touch this.

It's a disgrace that these people's lives are being destroyed, so pathetic morons here can snort ###### or inject ####### into their miserable selves.

How about looking pulling your head out. We have been helping Mexico. We have been helping Columbia. Guess what? It doesn't help. That is the real world. You would instead have us go down to Mexico and do what exactly? Do what we are doing in Iraq or Afghanistan? Sure Hercules.

Look at what happened to prohibition? It became legal and the bad guys had look elsewhere to make money. And besides Hercules read the news. Mexico and Columbia are considering legalizing drugs for the exact same reasons I gave you. I know , I know. You are going to say but this doesn't happen in Australia. I am really surprised you have not mentioned Australia yet in this topic. I am sure it is coming. It does in every other post of yours.

What have you done there? Have you sent in specialist US forces? Have you used remote air support?

If the strategy does not work, you change strategies, you don't just quit.

Dam straight you do what you are doing there. You don't even have a freagin border, you think you can contain this violence and keep it in Mexico?

Why is Prohibition always used here like some magical example? This is 2010 and that is alcohol, not drugs.

Well they don't border a nation where 26,000+ people have been executed during a battle with drug cartels. Though if they did, they definitely would not ##### away from it.

Reality is the the US has never had a serious battle with these cartels, so it's no wonder they operate and move even more freely than a bird.

Nothing will be done. Do you actually think the U.S. politicians aren't being paid off and participating in the drug trade too? Like an earlier poster said they should just legalize drugs and regulate it like alcohol and tobacco. Sure there would be addicts just like there are alcoholics.....but addicts will do drugs regardless if they are legal or illegal.

Someone is definitely being paid off for everyone to be so mum on this issue. These cartels have inflicted greater damage to America and Americans than 1,000 Bin Ladens, yet we do nothing; well nothing adequate.

If the US cannot take on some drug Cartels, good luck trying to take on a China.

Like the story I saw on CBS the other day, nothing ever happens proactively here and action is almost always only taken once something becomes a big problem. Unfortunately once action is taken, it costs 15 times the price that it would have cost to fix the problem proactively. It was saying how Americans simply do not praise or demand politicians be proactive, they prefer to cheer on the politician seen as doing something afterward.

The nation's history is plagued with examples of doing nothing, then paying dearly for it. So Atencio you are right, Australians are quite proactive and dynamic people, they don't wait for something to happen; rather, they do everything they can to prevent it. Hence the proactive stimulus leading to a total avoidance of the Global financial crisis.

Hence the toughening of security across the abroad, leading to no terrorist attacks. They did not need to be attacked to wake up, they learned from others mistakes.

We have had this discussion before. The drug cartel is not a conventional army. It is made up of people that can blend in to the population. We can't even control gang members here in the U.S. for the same reason.
