"If someone enters the country on this program and decides to stay past the three-month mark without applying for permanent citizenship — known as a green card — or a visa, they waive their rights to formal deportation proceedings."

Since when is a green card the same as citizenship? Is there such a thing as temporary citizenship? I think this journalist didn't do their homework.

I also wonder why someone living in San Francisco couldn't meet the minimum income requirements to sponsor. You need income well above the poverty guidelines just to afford a tiny apartment, even in the Mission District.

Anyway, I can imagine a meeting room at the offices of the Mission Loc@l. A group of pale skinned UC Berkeley grads are trying to figure out how to write an article that will drum up support for the "plight" of illegal immigrants. Some girl with an uncombed pixie haircut, hemp summer dress, and cheap Mexican sandals says "I know! We'll do an article about European immigrants being deported!". Everyone in the room applauds...

When do journalists ever do their homework?

There many people who have quite a reasonable income, but not always known to the IRS.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
