I just realized that we have to send original documents such marriage certificate, birth certificate to the NVC with DS-230. To be honest, I am a little nervous to send in the original because I only have two copies of my marriage certificate from Vietnam. And it was a pain to get them. Apparently, we can send it certify copies. Can I use a notary to certify my copies of marriage certificate, etc. \

Well, I believe the NVC requires that you send an original. That is why I had my wife get 3 or 4 "originals" when we got ours. Really, this is probably the only reason you will need to use the marriage certificate. I havent heard of anyone's documents getting lost. I know we sent original and 1 photocopy of each document to the NVC in the DS-230 package.

16 March 2012 Sent I-751 package from Aviano AB, Italy.

29 March 2012 Received everything back...wrong fee. thought we didn't have to pay biometrics since we were sending fingerprint cards and passport photos.

30 March 2012 Sent everything out again from Aviano AB, Italy.

10 April 2012 Check cashed

17 April 2012 Received NOA1 dated 6 April.

06 Dec 2012 Received 10 yr green card. Letter said it was approved 28 November 2012.

Unfortunately NVC does require "original documents issued by a competent authority, or certified copies bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority." As Scott and Mhay posted, I also obtained extra "originals" of my documents ...just in case...but all of the ones I submitted to NVC were returned at my interview. Good luck!

Agree with OBX - they do require originals, and you certainly don't want to delay your case because you didn't send in what they asked for. They will be returned to you at the interview
