I heard corroboration from an outside source that all she needs to get her SSN

is the I-551 stamp in her passport. She can also apply for a NYS drivers license

with that as well. I hope they won't be waiting for confirmation from the USCIS

database and will just take the stamp at face value.

Status must be verified before an SSN can be assigned or card is issued. Is this the machine readable immigrant visa (MRIV) stamp you get when you come in the country for the first time, or an I-551 stamp you sometimes can get after the AOS is approved?

If it's the MRIV stamp, did she check of on the DS-230 to be assigned an SSN? If yes, she needs to allow 21 days after entering the U.S. to receive the SSN card.

I wanted to wait until she got the GC because I believe I saw something about the auto insurance rates

being higher for a spouse that wasn't a permanent resident. In any case, we weren't planning for her

to drive earlier because she had foot surgery on both feet which has taken a while to "heel."

I hope we have a smoother time with the SSN this time around as long as the I-551 is all that is required.

She's been here since Dec. 29, 2009 and we got married New Year's Eve. That ended her status as a K-1 for the purpose

of getting a SSN (although there has been some dispute on this topic) because they said she had to wait for the EAD or

AOS. The interviewing officer (yesterday) gave her the I-551 stamp. I'm a little skeptical from prior experience if, as you say

if her status can be verified or not. I was planning to go to the SSA this Friday but if going early will screw things up

we'll wait a week or 3.

After getting my Green Card, I went in right away and my card wasn't verifying. What you can do is ask them to do the second step, electronic verification. Mine came back in 2 days and my card is on its way. It may be faster if you go in and they send in the second verification, instead of waiting for 2 to 3 weeks

CR-1's don't do 'AOS'.

They got the I-551 stamp AT the interview for AOS, in USA.

You been reading my blurbs about SAVE database, brain-dead SSA employees, apply in VISA name, time-window to apply, blah blah etc etc?

IIWY, when she has that 'card production ordered' status in the USCIS web portal - she's been updated in the SAVE database properly. But ya may not see any change in the portal.

If any 'email' comes in about approval, then is good notice that she's been updated in SAVE database.

It really is worth a shot, to show that I-551 stamp this week, though - regardless of any prior silliness.

The I-551 stamp has the same value as the physical Green Card which is also known as the I-551. Go figure!

It's the document proving that the bearer has the permission of the US Government to reside permanently in the United States.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Yes that's what the interviewing officer told us.

The stamp also has an expiration date.

We haven't looked at the date, but will for sure.

If the physical I-551 card is not received before the stamp expires,

I heard you have to fill out the following form:

Replacement of Permanent Resident Card

There would be no charge if you just check the box "My Previous Card Was Issued But Never Received."

(reason B)

If it was a regular card that was lost or stolen, there would be a fee of $290.

Biometrics fee of $80 may be included.

Another happy trip to the SSA this morning.

The rocket scientist there said (at first) the I-551 stamp in her passport was no good

because it didn't have a "set of numbers" he was so familiar with on the green card.

I told him very clearly that the passport stamp carried the same weight as the green card.

After about 10 minutes of him poking around on the keyboard, it was accepted.
